Capps, Lucas, Stanfield, Hines On Top
Funny Car points leader Ron Capps had the fastest provisional run in the first qualifying session for Sunday’s eliminations of the 13th annual O’Reilly NHRA Midwest Nationals Saturday afternoon at Gateway International Raceway in Madison.
Capps, 43 of Carlsbad, Calif. driving the NAPA Dodge Charger, had a 1,000-foot run of 4.11 seconds at 297.02 miles per hour. He was won three of the first six events of the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series.
Top Fuel driver Morgan Lucas, 25 of Brownsburg, Ind. and piloting the Geico/Lucas Oil dragster, is the provisional class leader after he made a 1,000-foot pass of 3.88 seconds at 299.46 mph. Lucas won his first Top Fuel career race two weeks ago in Commerce, Ga.
Pro Stock Car driver Greg Stanfield, 43 of Bossier City, La., set a track speed record with his quarter-mile pass when he stopped the timer in 6.573 seconds at 210.37 mph. He barely beat Mike Edwards of Coweta, Ga., who had a run of 6.575 seconds at 209.85 mph.
Pro Stock Motorcycle driver Andrew Hines, 25 of Brownsburg, Ind., remained on top of the PSM leaderboard after Friday’s quarter-mile pass of 6.920 seconds at 189.73 mph..
The final pro session will get underway shortly when the field wil be set for Sunday’s final elimination round, which begins at 11 a.m.
