Jason Feger made his first United Midwestern Promoters SummerNationals win a memorable one.
Feger, 31 of Bloomington, Ill., held off a late-race charge by Randy Korte to win the 40-lap feature Wednesday night at Tri-City Speedway in Pontoon Beach. Feger banked $6,000 for his efforts.
Billy Moyer of Batesville, Ark. was third, Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill. finished fourth and Brian Birkhofer of Muscatine, Iowa wound up fifth.
“This 40 laps felt like 100,” said Feger, who started from the pole position and led all 40 circuits on the three-eighths mile, high-banked track. “We just haven’t had things go our way this year.”
Feger, who ran the high side the entire way, said he had been talking to Birkhofer earlier on Wednesday and took to heart whatever advice Birkhofer offered by leading the entire way on a hot and muggy night.
“It was a good choice,” Feger said.
Feger first had to battle Rodney Melvin at the start, then fought with Scott James until James spun working lap 12. Moyer took his shot at Feger, who staved off Moyer’s challenge. Korte grabbed the second spot on lap 26 as he slid up in front of Moyer coming out of turn 4.
That’s the way the two ran until Feger bobbled in turns 1 and 2 on lap 37 allowing Korte to move under Feger. Korte tried to slide his way to the front on the final three laps but couldn’t get past Feger.
“All I could do was hope he screwed up once,” said Korte, of Highland. “He didn’t. I’ve never seen anybody run the high side like he does.”
