Thanks to County Council, we get to save the world

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

I’m always grateful when some level of government offers an opportunity for me to save the world. This month St. Louis County decided that my household, consisting of two senior citizens, should participate in their recycling program, at a cost of over six-dollars a month. I understand that a family of 6, 8, 10 or more will be paying the same fee. I certainly appreciate being included in this thinly veiled flat-tax-financed program. Only a few things worry me. What is the impact on the environment of the tens of thousands of large, black containers that recently appeared on a lawn near you? Were they crafted from recycle products?

Thanks to the County Council, it now costs to recycle.

Thanks to the County Council, you can no longer choose your trash service.

Thanks to the County Council, when I am displeased with my trash service, I can not call up my trash company and threaten to discontinue their service.

Thanks to the County Council, when I want to complain about my trash service, I get to call some government bureaucratic office that will “take care” of complaints.

Thanks to the County Council, my trash service will costs more. Since when can you trust the government to save you money?

Thanks to the County Council, the trash companies will have cushy contracts with the county and will have no/little incentive to do a good job.

Thanks to the County Council, the government will be bigger and will have more opportunity to become corrupter.

Thanks to the County Council, little trash companies will be eaten by big trash (ahem, cough, Fred Weber) companies.

Thanks to the County Council, capitalism will be more out the door and socialism will be closer in.

Thank you County Council for controlling more of my life at a higher cost in the name of recycling when it could be free.

I am not anti-recycling. I am anti-socialistic.
I support recycling. But not at the expense of freedom when there are alternatives that are cheaper, and less likely to become corrupt.

The St Louis county website states that there is a provision to opt-out of this program if a sub-division so wishes.

$6 a month is about one day’s ride to my workplace in my economy car. Where do I sign up ?

I’eagle_eye222001,

Thank you for your comment. You have correctly stated what is on thousands of people’s minds. I would add a couple of points.

Thanks to the County Council for taking money out of the hands of Boy Scouts, church groups, and others who have funded their programs with paper drives, can collections, and other recycling efforts. A side benefit is that young people will no longer learn about recycling through these programs.

Thanks to the County Council for setting up a program that allows the trash companies to charge me more for less service AND to allow them to sell my recycled trash. Meanwhile my wife is spending her time washing our trash so they don’t have to.

I hope county residents will keep this fiasco in mind when the trash Nazis come up for reelection.

It’s a shame that perhaps the county’s plan is so poorly executed, however, if everyone would recycle the 75% of their recyclable waste, instead of pitching it in the trash, perhaps we wouldn’t need trash-transfer stations and more landfills (that people are constantly complaining about).

Also, the recycling cost did not go up for everyone. Waste Management was charging me $6 a month for weekly service. Then, two years ago, they sent a letter to me that instead of raising the price, they’d cut my recycling pick-up to bi-weekly instead of weekly. Now, with this STL County recycling program, they have to start having it weekly, and it’s going to be included in the basic trash service (or so they say).

Anyway, it’s about time Saint Louis started encouraging people to recycle; without doing anything, people just wouldn’t do it. I think it’s pathetic that there are people who won’t utilize the recycling program when this program makes it so easy to do–you give plastics a quick rinse (other things, like junk mail and paper just pitch into a different container) and put the stuff on your curb one a week.

“, if everyone would recycle the 75% of their recyclable waste, instead of pitching it in the trash, perhaps we wouldn’t need trash-transfer stations and more landfills (that people are constantly complaining about).”

I have an idea, lets rename the trash transfer stations “Recycling Separation points” and get all the liberals and hippies to work there separating trash into different recyclable categories! That will make everyone happy since everyone will be contributing the recycling effort by producing trash.

Si Vis,

Nice strawman, but on a more serious note, as a so-called conservative, you should support recycling since it reduces the need for oil which funs terrorism.

Face it, you’re a poser.

“you should support recycling since it reduces the need for oil which funs terrorism.”

I am all for recycling, I just hate hearing the libtards preach about how bad we are for the planet, and I dont want to separate trash, I’ll leave that for the liberals and hippies.

To you oil point, I know a way to reduce our dependence on foreign oil also, use our own.
