An honorary degree for Phyllis Schalfly is an embarrassment

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

I am deeply dismayed to learn that Washington University has announced that an honorary doctorate will be given to self-proclaimed anti-feminist and anti-humanist Phyllis Schlafly at this year’s Spring Commencement.

Schlafly has devoted her life to demagogical grandstanding that is not interested in free speech, intellectual inquiry, debate, or truth-seeking based in reason or research and her work represents an ideological project that stands in direct opposition to the educational mission of Washington University. Awarding her an honorary doctorate awards a life that has striven to be contrary to the very work that the university purports to do.

Further, as an instructor to countless young women at Washington University, and as a female graduate student myself, I am disgusted at our honoring Schlafly whose consistent message to and about women has been one of denigration and oppression. Schalfly’s insistence that women have no business in higher education except if they have failed to get married and have children, that women should and must be second-class citizens to men, her claims that women themselves are to blame for sexual harassment, that women who are raped in marriage were asking for it by getting married are rationally, not to mention morally, appalling. What message does Washington University send to its female students, 51% of whom are women, by honoring this work?

I am embarrassed that Phyllis Schlafly will have an honorary degree from the same institution from which I will receive my doctorate and that I am at an institution that seemingly values women and the tenants of higher education so little.

Where are some claims to back your assertions? Mrs. Shlafly is a feminist of an older sort, and I seriously doubt that her anti-liberal feminist views have led her to a belief that women should be second-class citizens behind men. Proof please.

The Eagle Forum, Phyllis Schlafy’s Radio Live on February 10, 2001 had on her radio show the subject matter of urban schools. The guest, some woman, who’s name I cannot recall, had extreme racistand bigoted views, and it was obvious that Mrs. Schlafly shared these same racist views.

The program I will never forget aired on February 10, 2001, and was totally digusting, and so was Phyllis Schafy. Maybe Washington University should request a copy of that show before honoring her with such a degree.

Liberalism and college campuses — where all thought is accepted and respected, unless it strays from the prescribed dogma.

GTB,
The problem isn’t taht they are not willing to honor “non-liberals” it is the outrageousness of this particular honoree. I’m sure they could find someone just as to-the-right and not so wrong.

One would think it relatively easy to recall racist and bigoted remarks along with who said them if indeed they were made on a supposedly unforgettable program. Of course, if one’s intention is to make an ugly smear, then verifiable evidence is unnecessary.

Ms. Demant… Perhaps the message Washington University wants to send to its female students is one of diversity, consideration, and tolerance. Maybe the tenants of higher education will survive honoring and recognizing a woman who gained nationwide notoriety exercising her freedom to express her opinion. Or should women who don’t subscribe to politically correct feminist ideals just keep their mouths shut?

Although I disagree with much of Schlafly’s message, I disagree more with the elitism of today’s leftist acedemics. Universities should be teaching students how to think; not what to think.

I’m not gonna comment on Shlafly directly. I actually wasn’t too faimliar with her until yesterday. It sounds like I really don’t want to be too familiar with her. I’d like to comment, however, solely on the general topic of speakers at college campuses. It comes up every few months and plays wedge between ideologies.

I’ve found that people on both sides are relatively hypocritical on the subject. Either it a defense of radical expression or its a “disgusting” honor that a university didn’t need to bestow. It just depends on what side of the line your on ideologically as to what your argument is. And sometimes the argument is tempered too, depending on how radical the speaker. I’ll compare the aparently offensive Shlafly to the controversial Ahmadenijad. We obviously see the fire storm over Shlafly right now, she anti-woman and racist and etc.. Not agreeing or disagreeing, just pointing out the controversy. Ahmadenijad is obvious an issue because of his statements about killing Jews and other issues.

Now with Ahmaddenijad the right went crazy. What is an American university doing giving this guy a forum? This didn’t need to happen etc. etc. The left ranged from openminded to harmless. This is the tempering I spoke of. The line was that this guy is obviously a nut so its gonna do no harm letting him speak. It’ll just prove him crazy, all in the name of free speech. Whats worse is that there were some students defending Ahmadenijad and took the school to task for its “biased” introduction. Now, just basically flip it for Schlafly. Left is going crazy and the right is defending free speech. This kind of hypocrisy is just irritating.

Here’s my advice to Universities that want to try this: don’t. It causes too much of an uproar to bring in one controversial voice. I understand universities are about learning and pushing envelopes, but people should also try learning tact. I would say that the best course is to balance the equation. If you’re going to have an Ahmadinejad in, then give Bush the floor the next night. If you have Shlafly in to honor, have a prominent local feminist in a week later.

My only overriding left versus right issue is treatment of thes guests. I’m very disappointed at the lack of class and respect that some individuals on the left show conservatives in these forums. While protesting outside is decidedly necessary and honorable, shouting down a guest is inexcusable. Regardless of if we like it or not, the guest has been invited and should be shown the courtesy of being allowed to speak. Although they should be challenged as well. And finally, the guys with pies should be both arrested and if they are students expelled. This issue seems to solely stem from a few individuals on the left. I think we can all agree on this aspect, even if we don’t like the speaker.

Schlafly condones marital rape. Read her speech to Bates College in March 2007. This stance is unacceptable. Period. In fact, she claims it is not possible for a man to rape his wife. I could care less about her political ideology. I would feel the same way if Wash U chose to honor a holocaust denier.

I wonder if the Eagle Forum would honor a woman who raised a gay son, except for the fact that she did?
