Bestowing honor on Schlafly harm’s university’s reputation

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Washington University in St. Louis just dropped a few rungs in my estimation from the wannabe ”elite”  college it would like to portray itself to an also-ran when it blesses Phyllis Schlafly with an honorary degree. That gesture applauds and sanctions her backward attitude toward our society. I have scant respect for her tacky rantings and ravings. She should “get back in the kitchen where women belong” and the University’s less than scholarly right-wing board of local business types should find another influential communicator for her honorarium.

It is interesting that liberals feel that “love and tolerance are missing in the radical right” , however they have no problem demonstarting a lack of love and tolerance when it comes to making comments about Phyllis Schlafly. I guess she doesn’t have a right to disagree with them but they have right to disagree with her. It seems to me that both the left & right have a problem with understanding “Love” and both are clearly intolerant of the other.

Did you see her at the ceremony? OMG - she looks like a cadaver. Are we sure all those folks who turned their backs are among the horrible, god-hating, whiner Liberals? Maybe they just couldn’t stand the sight of her rotting flesh.

Someone who knows Karen should repeatedly slap both her hands for typing such a vile comment. Her comment is a lie and anonymous posts like hers make these blogs trashy.

What a disappointing example of the state of the country. This large group of privileged students of an elite university can find nothing better to complain about than the character of a person receiving an honorary degree.

Are they unaware that the world has larger problems? Do they plan on contributing to a smug, vapid protest against a lady of whom they probably hadn’t heard until recently? And after all is over, will they take their degrees and go out and try to get rich?

We are certainly educating the wrong people, or rather failing to educate.

I have never known Phyllis Schlafly to offer anything near the idea of “intellectual debate.” The University decided to honor willful ignorance as a role model.

Laurence,

You’re absolutely correct. What right does a major academic institution have in supporting free speech? Why hasn’t Wash U’s speech police been tasked to deal with such an outrage?

The next thing you know, Rush Limbaugh will be selling “Operation Chaos” T-shirts in the Quadrangle!

“All we ask: Be kind; be honest; be civil; discuss issues, not personalities.”

After nearly a day, post #22 is still up. Why does Karen get to be mean but Jamie asks the rest of us to be nice?

Dwayne, your comments deliver PERFECTLY an explanation of the problem…

in spite of the fact that homosexuality is NOT a behavior, and that every credible scientific, medical, and mental health authority has confirmed that it’s perfectly natural and normal for some people to be gay, the vicious bigoted lie that it’s “unnatural behavior” is spewed.
And it’s not being rewarded, we’re only calling for the simple American principle of equality to be honored.

The dispicable homophobia and bigotry of Phyllis Schlafly and the radical right ignore facts, ignore science, and ignore what America and decent people stand for. She should not be honored by any educational institution. Her hate is not American, it is not academic, and it is not Christian.
