Civics 101 guy needs to take Civics 102

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A letter writer in the May 9 Post-Dispatch accused it’s editors and letter writers of blaming President George W. Bush for the state of the union. The letter writer says the fault lies with the Congress which is controlled by the Democrats and claims they have complete control and can pass legislation needed to correct the problems. Perhaps the letter writer is not aware that it takes 60 of the 100 votes in the Senate to put legislation on the agenda for a finale vote. The Republicans have 49 votes to the Democrats 51. The Democrats do have a majority but do not have the 60 votes to pass any legislation needed to correct and problems. If the Senate rules allowed for a majority to rule, then you can blame the Democrats. The Democrats have the majority but it is not large enough to overcome the Republicans who have been blocking legislation needed to correct the problems created by the Bush Administration.

For the guy who had Civics 101, funny, the Republicans had a majority in both houses and a sitting president for many years. But somehow, the mess we’re now in on all fronts has been caused by the 51 - 49 Democrat’s lead in the Senate for 16 months. Were you actually awake during Civics 101?

Where were you when the Democrats, in the minority at the time used filbusters against judicial appointments?. This is something that had never been done before, the only thing that saved the process for approving judges was the (gang of 14) in the center which allowed the senate to continue with the business of judicial appointments.

All of you are like a bunch of 1st graders. HE started it! No, HE did! Give it up.

The Democrats in Congress only gave the Republicans a taste of their own medicine that was so liberally doled out during the Clinton years. Wahh wahh.

The REAL civics lesson is that effective government in our system absolutely requires compromise and give and take. Without it, it flat doesn’t work. When the majority believes that compromise is an evil thing, then nothing can happen.

I’m amazed that a Republican Congress, in power for only 10 of the last 70 years could dish out so many bitter pills to the injured innocents across the aisles. How could those poor victimized jellyfish ever work up the spine to retaliate?

Yeah but they had a good run from the late 1800s thru the early 1900s didn’t they? I come up with 84 years of the last 154 years. Of course, I was always weak in math.

Well this would seem an appropriate time to check some things out. Sage, I especially invite you, and of course anyone else who feels the need to check these numbers out to see just how accurate they are. I’ll tell you these numbers come from an article written by Eric Alterman titled ” Why WE Loathe Liberals” and was in the last months issue of Playboy.

Since 1960 The federal deficit has averaged 131 billion under republican presidents and about 30 billion under democrats. On average a republican year sees the deficit grow by 36 billion while under democrats it shrinks by 25 billion.

There are some other choice arguments made but I’m just interested in the details surrounding these ones.

Sage, just how many judicial appointments sat on the back burner in the Senate during the Clinton years? Some of them for years? By responding the way you did, it’s clear that you missed my point. Newt Gingrich, in a recent TIME magazine interview, said essentially what I’ve been thinking for a long time: There is a significant difference between having power and being able to effectively govern. The current occupant of the White House, and his party have proven unable to understand the basics of how American Government is supposed to work.

What a laugh riot! So because the Democrats don’t have complete, absolute, unchecked power, everything is Bush’s fault! The only thing that will save America is to give the Democrats unlimited, uncontrolled power! Gas prices never got this high until the Democrats seized Congress! Food prices have never got as high as they are now when the GOP controlled Congress! Oil never crossed $120 per barrell until the Democrats took over Congress! Facts are a tough thing for the radical left, aren’t they?!

How can it be that the evil Republicans are preventing Congress from taking action on our nation’s ills? Isn’t the messiah, Barak Obama, a member of the Senate? Isn’t he the Great Uniter? Can’t he defeat the Republicans in Congress the same way he’s going to defeat al-Qaeda (and Chavez and Iran), by simply giving a great speech? Aren’t his unmatched oratory skills and ability to transcend and unite good enough to run circles around the evil GOP? What about all of Obama’s accomplishments in the Senate, so numerous that nobody has ever mentioned a single one? How dare you indict the messiah Obama like this!

Which party wouldn’t allow oil companies to build oil refineries? Which party won’t allow us to drill in ANMAR? Which party’s POTUS signed a bill forbidding oil companies to explore and dig for oil shale in Nevada because the Riady’s gave him campaign donations and they own the largest oil shale reserve on the planet (and it’s not in America)?

All of you socialists that support the Donk party are the biggest hypocrites on this Earth. How do ya’ll sleep at night? You have yourself to blame for higher food costs (farm bills and ethanol payoffs to farmers), higher gas prices (see above), higher taxes, etc. because you vote for the party that has no clue how to run an economy. The only economic policy the socialists want to run are 5-year plans similar to the ones that the Soviet Union enacted.

Face it, ya’ll want a federal gov’t controlled economy. The problem with that plan is that it doesn’t work.
