Civics 101 guy needs to take Civics 102

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A letter writer in the May 9 Post-Dispatch accused it’s editors and letter writers of blaming President George W. Bush for the state of the union. The letter writer says the fault lies with the Congress which is controlled by the Democrats and claims they have complete control and can pass legislation needed to correct the problems. Perhaps the letter writer is not aware that it takes 60 of the 100 votes in the Senate to put legislation on the agenda for a finale vote. The Republicans have 49 votes to the Democrats 51. The Democrats do have a majority but do not have the 60 votes to pass any legislation needed to correct and problems. If the Senate rules allowed for a majority to rule, then you can blame the Democrats. The Democrats have the majority but it is not large enough to overcome the Republicans who have been blocking legislation needed to correct the problems created by the Bush Administration.

*1, you are dumber than a box of rocks. I knew you wouldn’t have a comeback because what I wrote is true.

This letter appeared on another blog.

Jim Udell in his letter to the Post-Dispatch (“The $4 Myth”, March 14) dismisses Columnist Leonard Pitt’s thoughtful column simply as hatred of President Bush. I too dislike Mr. Bush and his Republican cronies but try not to let my dislike get in the way of the facts and responsible predictions which sometimes fortunately fail to materialize.

The fact is that the national average price of gasoline was $1.46 when Bush took office and is now well over $3 per gallon. Of course Bush and his super majority Republican Congress don’t deserve all the blame as more drivers chasing an initially finite supply will eventually cause a run up in price even without the colossal Republican fiscal mismanagement that has prompted a worldwide decline of the dollar resulting in a more than doubling of the price of crude.

Could we reasonably expect that our President, a failed former Texas businessman, have any notion of the price of the fluid that keeps America running? Of course we could. Unfortunately he probably couldn’t tell you the off-budget-cost of our disastrous excursion in the Middle East or that we are dangerously close to the 4000th American casualty in Iraq in addition to almost 100,000 Iraqis either. What a waste.

Rodney Mulvania

Mr. Mulvania dislikes Bush and his republican cronies. That’s okay. I detest and hate the liberals and their terrorist appeasing and terrorist supporting ideology. Always have and always will.

Has it ocurrd to anyone that this whole left vs. right thing is exactly what the politicians want? While we work our butts off and argue with each other, our wonderful government passes legislation that would don’t know about or care to understand because we are too busy placing blame. All federal politicans — particulary in the senate — are bought and paid for by lobbyists. Period. It’s absurd that the United Sates of America has to depend on others to provide oil. We have plenty — go get it. And it’s equally absurd that everything is made in China. We are destroying ourselves from within and by our own policies. I’ll bet people can name the last American Idol but they can’t tell you anything about McCain or Obama’s platforms. Ugh. An ignorant electorate is Washington’s best friend.

It’s a sad commentary looking at many of your comments at how quickly discussion can degenerate into name calling. Good political discussion should be about an open minded exchange of facts. Too many people want to say I’m liberal or I’m conservative and therefore if you don’t agree with me you are wrong. Many of the comments revolved around the state of affairs and the fact that it isn’t Bush’s fault because Congress is controlled by the Dems. One of you referred to Obama as the Dems so called Messiah. Well many people believe that Reagan was one of our greatest presidents, me included. Yet he did all he did with a Dem controlled Congress. So don’t kid yourselves and think that the current mess of America is not at the hands of dubbya. He has plenty of power to get things done. It is his policies that have produced the state of the union.

I find it very typical of the Republican Party of recent times, when even today, President Clinton is blamed for all the negative that has happened. Example, Senator Bond accuses that high gas prices are due to President Clinton’s veto of a bill to increase domestic oil drilling. The fact of the matter is that, if the oil drilling did take place the price of gas would not be affected more than a dime of todays price. Also, the Republicans controlled the majority of the Senate and House for 6 of the 7 years of President Bush’s term. If this oil drilling bill was such a great idea why was it not to presented to the most oil friendly president of our US history. If our country’s problems are to be solved, all political parties need to work on solutions not finger pointing. The good of our country should come first not the political party.
