Democratic energy policies have denied Americans jobs and hurt the economy

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

It is the Democratic policies that deny the opening of oil fields on American soil and off shore. Washington’s leftist regulations have stopped energy companies from building refineries. With world wide consumption levels higher than production levels* ,approximately 5 million barrels a day. Americans can expect the oil price to continue to rise. For decades, special interest groups such as the Sierra Club and Green Peace have lobbied for legislation that denies American companies access to domestic oil fields. Wikipedia.com list 89 environmental groups. Special interests and Democratic politicians in the federal government and the state level have achieved a stranglehold over America’s oil resources. It is common knowledge that maintains ,with more oil in the market our consumers would see the price of oil drop and stabilize. At this time, the American consumers are at the mercy of OPEC and states such as Venezuela. The United States economy, and every citizen is dependant on the most unstable countries in the world and stated enemies. Clearly this is a national security issue.

With the removal or correction of leftist policies, American companies would expand in business and hire American workers. These high quality jobs would provide workers with benefits such as health insurance and a retirement plan, something that everyone desires. Added to that failure are the Democratic policies and special interest lawsuits, by trial lawyers, that stop companies from building refineries. The cost of lawsuits are passed on to the consumer as a business expense, raising prices. These refineries would add gas to the market and cause the price of gas to be reduced. Again, refineries provide good high paying jobs with benefits for workers. America’s last refinery was built in Garyville, Louisiana in 1976. I’m amazed that gas isn’t higher. Another point to consider, is the cost of goods and services that increase with fuel and oil based materials. America’s natural resources should be used to grow good jobs domestically instead of outsourcing the jobs to the Middle East. It is interesting that Communist China, working with the Cuban government, is in the process of building an oil field off the Florida coast.

These investments in American resources would deny terror states U.S. funding via the oil market. The Left has denied voters the financial stability that American jobs provide while growing an important sector of business. At this time of economic upheaval, high quality jobs in the energy sector would provide American citizens long term financial stability that NAFTA has denied since the Clinton administration. Clearly, the Democrats have failed to protect an American economic sector that needs to expand for quality jobs, voters financial stability and national security. It is this writers opinion, that ultimately America is better off with high paying long term jobs and energy independence from the Middle East. America needs to bring jobs home starting with the energy sector.

Mr. Moseley… The USA had a wake up call in 1974 regarding our vulnerability to the international oil cartels. Though the Democrat Party controlled the legislative branch for most of the intervening years, the Republicans are far from blameless in our pathetic response. Neither national party provided the leadership needed to address the energy issue.

When we desperately need to come together on behalf of domestic production, responsible conservation, and development of energy alternatives, the partisan and ideological blame game just prolongs the chaos.

Unfortunately, none of the current contenders for President display any inclination to overcome the special interest politics that got us here.

While I appreciate Mr. Moseleys motives of making our country more energy independent, I disagree with his proposals on how we should go about this. How significant is oil exploration within the US when it comes to our future energy independence ? We know that the biggest oil reserve is in Alaska. By the DOE’s own estimates, this holds between 1.3 and 5.6 billion barrels of oil. In contrast, we consumed an average of 21 million barrels per day in 2005. That gives us a best case estimate of 9 months worth of reserves in Alaska.

The best long shot is renewable sources. Maybe ethanol production in its present form is not the answer, but let us keep in mind that viable technological solutions don’t simply fall out of the sky. It is a long drawn process, subject to successes and failures, but the objective is well worth the effort.

Except for those that are (still) invested in oil and are betting on those investments making them millions.

US Rep Paul Kanjorski, D-PA has introduced a bill named “The Consumer Reasonable Energy Price Protection Act.” The bill would be applauded in the old USSR politburo. The bill establishes a “Resonable Profits Board” to determine if oil company’s profits exceed a “rational” threshold. Can you believe that a member of the US Congress wants the gov’t to determine when profits are no longer “resonable” or “rational?”

According to an analysis by the Tax Foundation in 2005, since 1977, goverments collected tax revenues “more than twice the amount of domestic profits earned by major US oil companies.” However, rest assured, Cong. Kanjorski’s “Resonable Profits Board” would not apply to the biggest price gouger of all…the federal government.

The higher you tax something the less you get of it. Hence, the last time a “windfall” profits tax was enacted by the Donks/Socialists (in the 1980’s), domestic production dropped between 3 and 6 percent and dependence on foreign oil increased between 8 and 16 percent.

Once again, the Donks prove that they will use every lever of the federal gov’t to bring us to our knees and move us to a Soviet style economy.

Do you honestly believe the Sierra Club has a stronger lobby than the oil companies? What are you smokin’?

Tango- this is not a new bill. He proposed the same thing in Sep. ‘05 as h.r. 3664 and it died. It is back as h.r. 5800
