Glass houses and stones: Bush should avoid talk of appeasing Nazi Germany

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

I whole heartedly agree with Mr. Don Meyer’s analysis of the Bush administration’s use of Nazi-like tactics.  However, I think it is also of historical importance to note the role that President Bush’s grandfather, the late Senator Prescott Bush, played in the appeasement and support of Nazi Germany.

Grandaddy Bush made a fortune as the director and shareholder in a number of companies that were involved with the financial backers of Nazism.  Prescott Bush’s business dealings continued until 1942 when his assets were finally seized under the Trading with the Enemy Act.  The tanks rolling into Poland that President Bush referred to in his speech before the Israeli Parliament, as well as the rise of Nazi Germany and the ensuing Holocaust, were made possible in part due to the Bush family.  “W” uber alles!

Actually Ed, that isn’t quite the WHOLE story - just the one promoted by the lefties. Thanks for the opportunity to finally get the truth out. Here is the rest of the story for you folks:

Prescott Bush and George H. Walker Bush were employed by an investment-banking firm called Brown Brothers Harriman. It was Averall Harriman, FDR’s ambassador to Moscow and Truman’s commerce secretary, who initiated the German investment well before either of the Bushes joined the firm. It was actually Harriman, who managed the foreign investments, who met with the German leaders, not Prescott who managed the firm’s domestic portfolio.

I’d just like to ask this question, what does the actions of a grandfather have to do with the grandson anyway? Am I to be held account for anything and everything that my ancestors did? If thats the case, then who gets to say anything about any policy considering we all have relatives with a blemish somewhere?

Just when you think anti-Bush insults couldn’t get any snottier, they hork up something like this. Mr Olsen has no idea what he’s talking about, and worse, likely doesn’t care.

So, W is responsible for the rise of Naziism now? My grandfather won the Nobel prize…does that mean I can call myself a Nobel laureate? Puhlease.

I believe the actions of the grandfather are relevent in this case. The Bushes have maintained political power for many decades by remaining tight knit and maintaining generations of powerful conservative friends. W is a chip off the old block. Just like grandpa he dances with the enemy and preaches American values.
Prescott Bush may not have been in the same league with Harrimen but he continued to do business with Hitler until the US threatened legal remedies for his dubious involvement. I agree that many times sons and grandsons are held accountable for actions that are against their personal constitution but the Bush gang is an established old firm whose principles have remained constant for generations. I agree with Mr. Olsen.

I agree with Mr. Olsen and Mr. Beck.

Every time I see Bush walking along and holding hands with some high-ranking Saudi sheik I ask myself, “Whose side is he REALLY on?”

I am a believer in letting all voices be heard. Readers can then sift through the various opinions and make up their own minds. This letter oversteps the bounds of good taste. The Post has diminished itself by printing such slander.

However, the letter has served one useful purpose. It has exposed the type of deceitful hate speech spewed on the far left propaganda blogs and exposed the usual hard left posters on this site as non-thinking haters rather than thoughtful citizens to be taken seriously.

What a hoot! the radical left has sunk to yet another new low! This letter is abject slander, and I hope that the great and honorable Bush family will take proper legal action against Edward Olsen and the Post for publishing this slander. Even al-Qaeda wouldn\’t publish this tripe, but Ed Olsen and the Post have far more hate for President Bush than bin Laned does.

The fact is that the Kennedy family were the great nazi-lovers of the day. It was old grandaddy kennedy who was deriding FDR for getting us into a war with Hilter (who had nothing to do with December 7!) when Truman had to set him straight.

It speaks volumes about the depths to which the Post and the extreme hatemongers of the left will sink to spread hate about their enemies. The same crowd that abhors the politics of personal destruction come up with pure garbage such as this.

Edward olsen and the editors of the Post should hang their heads in shame for publishing this rabid hate speech. It’s a pity the only feeling they have is pure hatred.

Obamessiah’s clan was involved in the slave trade, does that make him incapable of talking about race?

Mr Beck

Your right, The Kennedys have maintained political power for many decades by remaining tight knit and maintaining generations of powerful liberal friends. Teddy is a chip off the old block. Just like grandpa he dances with the enemy and preaches American values.

And for Mr Walsh,

Every time I see Kennedy walking along and holding hands with some high-ranking Socialist I ask myself, “Whose side is he REALLY on?”

But then again you probably all cheered when Maxine Waters stated she wanted to socialize the oil companies.
