Instead of truck lanes, how about a toll toad with a higher speed limit?

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A response to “Fewer trucks, not more” (Apr 30).  Mr. Colton’s suggestion has an optimal tone.  However, a feasible solution is to modify the MoDot plan by building the new car-only lanes PARTIALLY financed as a toll road with only two additional exits en route and a higher minimum and maximum speed limit.  This would make travel between STL and KC more convenient and competitive with air travel.  Truckers and those who wish neither to pay the toll nor travel the fast track to KC (and Columbia or Jefferson City) can share the proposed “truck-only” lanes.  These shared lanes would, in effect, serve as an “outer road” for the not-thru car traffic.Howard B. Well, I’m all for toll toads as long as they gobble up the skeeters, but I digress…

There is a much easier solution, how about making it illegal for commercial vehicles to travel in the left hand/passing lane. On top of that, trucks are not permitted on the HWYs during rush hour (6-9a and (4-7p). This is a ZERO cost solution (other then the cost of informative signs). Everyone saves money, truckers and motorists aren’t wasting more gas in rush hour traffic, and all the other benefits of driving with less trucks.

I’ve seen the no trucks in the left lane in many other metro areas, specifically NY. Works quite well.

A better idea!

How about a high speed electified rail line. Imagine, St. Louis to Kansas City or St. Louis to Chicago in 2 hours or less at 3/4 the price of air travel. Subsidised, sure, but we’re already subsidising air and car travel.

Just think, no hour wait in the security line only to be told you’ve been singled out for a complete search.

No TSA searching 80 year old grandmothers or 12 year old children.

Licensed to carry concealed? Welcome aboard.

Over Sold? Add another car to the train.

No sitting on a taxiway for hours with no restrooms, water, or food.

Comfortable seats more that 12 inches wide.

Get up and go for a walk.

Eat a great meal prepared fresh in the dining car.

Have a drink in the club car.

The advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

Perhaps this gets through maybe not. I have been placed on the \”your comment is awaiting moderation\” watch list. I have offended the guardians of good taste, political correctness or PD; I know not which.

But, if you have ever suffered the toll road tax on a regular basis you will never allow that into this state. A toll road is a license to steal from to public FOREVER! James r. I applaud you foresight and intelligence but that will never happen in Missouri. There\’s just too much \”doesn\’t do a damn thing for me\” between KC and StL.

And who is going to keep the trucks out of the cars only lanes?

James-Those were the days weren’t they? My father and I always went on vacation by train (before Amtrak) and they were always a great ride. I miss them-especially the dome cars.

Hmmmm. Why not ban any truck with more than 4 wheels from entering Missouri. That would solve the problem of cars competing with trucks for space on the highway. LOL

Interesting comments from some of the arm chair rocket scientists. From someone who has traveled extensively on the nations highways, banning trucks from the left lane of three lane highways around cities does work fairly well.We already have regulations on speed, following too close, not signaling for the proper length of time before changing lanes, all they need is more enforcement.Interesting how the proposed new bridge across the Mississippi, instead of bypassing the traffic,St Louis is demading it bring all the traffic right through downtown to add more congestion and inconvenience for everyone, political racket science 101!!

#5: For trucks passing through St Louis, we already have the northern edge of I-270 serving the East-West I-70 traffic and I-255 in Illinois serving the North-South I-55 traffic. About the situation downtown, we have only one interstate grade bridge (i.e. Poplar Street Bridge) downtown serving I-64, I-44, I-55 and I-70. The proposed new bridge is deperately needed.

When I think about bridges in St. Louis, I always think about the wrong exit the Griswald’s took in the first “Vacation” movie and wound up cruising the streets of E. St. Louis.

Kids this is a side of America we don’t normally see. Look at all that blight.
