Columnist’s main idea undercut by underhanded photo

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

I thought it was curious that the Post-Dispatch (8/16/08) found it necessary to print a photo below the op-ed piece by Jonah Goldberg encouraging drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The photo of a solitary polar bear on a vast, open plain serves as a silent counterpoint to the conservative Goldberg’s arguments.

Perhaps the paper will continue this practice with other contributors. When Paul Krugman bashes President Bush for his handling of the economy, a photo of 10,000 women paying $100 apiece to see Barry Manilow recently could be included.

When Maureen Dowd tells us that the rest of the world hates America because of George Bush, a photo of the President smiling with the center-right leaders of Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany could appear at the end of the column.

And when Leonard Pitts rails against the way police treat young black men, perhaps a photo of the arrest of a thug who stole a car, drove it 100 miles per hour through the city, ran a red light, crashed into another car, and killed an innocent elderly woman could be shown.

I think the word you were looking for was “dubious”, not curious. You’re right though, far be it from them to post a picture of just a vast open plain without the polar bear. I’m sure there is a picture like that somewhere, you know a lot of people take those kinds, with nothing in it, except a vast, open frozen tundra. It’s no secret the Post has liberal bias but they certainly print the fair share of right wing articles, too many in my opinion. Did you happen to notice the logic that Mr. Goldberg used for drilling? “how do we know, we havn’t tried?” Really? Because the right has been so good at making predictions of coming situations we’ll just lend you a gimme? Why don’t we just up and pull out of Iraq? You don’t know that everything won’t be all right, I mean, we havn’t even tried! I want to know why the story about the Iraqi politician that shot and killed 2 of our service members wasn’t on the front page. That’s liberal bias for ya.
