Columnist’s main idea undercut by underhanded photo
I thought it was curious that the Post-Dispatch (8/16/08) found it necessary to print a photo below the op-ed piece by Jonah Goldberg encouraging drilling for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). The photo of a solitary polar bear on a vast, open plain serves as a silent counterpoint to the conservative Goldberg’s arguments.
Perhaps the paper will continue this practice with other contributors. When Paul Krugman bashes President Bush for his handling of the economy, a photo of 10,000 women paying $100 apiece to see Barry Manilow recently could be included.
When Maureen Dowd tells us that the rest of the world hates America because of George Bush, a photo of the President smiling with the center-right leaders of Great Britain, France, Italy and Germany could appear at the end of the column.
And when Leonard Pitts rails against the way police treat young black men, perhaps a photo of the arrest of a thug who stole a car, drove it 100 miles per hour through the city, ran a red light, crashed into another car, and killed an innocent elderly woman could be shown.
