Maintaining and breaking gender stereotypes all in one issue

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

I have two questions for the post. Number one: Is Joe Holleman’s column, “Life Sherpa” meant to be a parody of sexism, sort of analogous to Archie Bunker, America’s most lovable racist Or is he genuinely not original, such that he must regurgitate tired gender stereotypes?

Question number two: Was the post trying to be ironic by juxtaposing his column of cliche platitudes next to a photo-spread of stereotype-defying, innovative professional young women. Is this the post’s attempt at being even-handed. Instead of sporadically highlighting progressive types, like the Roller Derby Gals, the post should give them a regular column and reduce dinosaurs like Holleman to an occasional mention for novelty sake.

Since physical contact roller derby has been around since the 30s I’m not sure innovative really fits. Why do you imagine the majority of the audience is male? Did you think only women were gonna show up? Is that the reason for the outfits? Never read Joe’s column but I think I’ll give it a look.

Amanda, why would anyone ever read a column called “Life Sherpa” to begin with? Do you need that much guidence that you have to get it from a newspaper column? Also, the Post purged most of the “dinosaurs” when Lee took over the paper.

Mr. Holleman seems to believe that one becomes a man by behaving like other men.

I believe the opposite - that one becomes a man by finding his own path.
