Missing: Important news from the daily paper

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Where’s the important news on the front page of the St. Louis Post Dispatch?

On Tuesday (June 18) there was nothing on the front page about the biggest flood along the Mississippi River in a generation! In fact, above the fold of the paper there was a picture of a woman tending a vegetable garden downtown, and a headline about local canoeing that read, “Our Rivers Are Perfect”.

Are you kidding? Our rivers are NOT perfect! There is a wall of water coming downstream that we haven’t seen in 15 years! This flood has killed dozens of people and damaged property in the billions of dollars.

Why is this flood story front page news on the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the lead story on ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC news broadcasts, yet the Post Dispatch has almost ignored it?

The President of the United States is so moved by the devastation that he’s visiting the region and the PD has ignored that too. Instead there was a picture of music rapper on the bottom of the front page and we were reminded to go see him by a headline that read “Don’t Miss T.I., Keyshia Cole”. Where’s the news? Ugg!

I’m a first-timer, so I’m unsure this is the right place for my comment. Nevertheless, in the June 20, 2008 edition of the Post-Dispatch, the Sports Section named the high school programs of the years and MICDS was listed as Number 3 in the Small Schools. Regrettably, though the boys and girls tennis teams together with the football team were noted. A puzzling omission, however, was any mention of the five-time state champion girls lacrosse team. Enough to move MICDS up? Not my job to decide, but how does this achievement not merit mention?

Your right wl, it should have been mentioned and I know devistating these type of omissions are. I hope you called the sports department. I always just pick up the phone and contact someone when I have a beef at the PD.
Most everyone with the exception of the newsroom, are pretty nice.

Michael - I forgot your comment. The PD front page and the newsroom hasn’t the foggiest clue as to what is pertinent news. This is quite common. But if a bus crashes in Tanzania, now that news. And they wonder why no one reads their paper.

I also forgot, I heard on the news tonight that Sen. McCaskill was praising FEMA for the great job they have done in helping flood victims. In fact, many flood victims have said how wonderful the help has been. Gee, now that Brownie is gone, you’d think the media could give kudos to FEMA for getting it right this time. Unfortunately, they are getting a lot of practice lately. It seems like floods have now replaced hurricanes.

It is some what common sense. Are we truly surprised when tornados come through the area? No, we live in the Midwest where tornados are some what common. We practice drills at school and work for such events. So I am surprised when the area floods? No, we live at the confluence of 2 major rivers of the country, not to mention all the smaller water ways that dump into both. When you buy land in a known flood plain and then are surprised when to whole thing gets flooded you will not get any sympathy from me.

Ditto Eagle Scout–totally agree with everything you said.

Moreover, how much more coverage do you possibly need?? You can’t flip on a TV without some reporter telling you how the river is flooded. Right. We all get it. Moving on.

That story about the downtown garden was news to me. I knew nothing about it. The flooded river, on the other hand. . . .

with the Post spewing far left hate and a lack of real news journalists, it is no suprise that subscribership is sinking fast. the publication is overpriced, the ads cost too much, and the bargain box is no bargain as now poor people have no way to sell something for their sustinence……….the Post is pathetic!!!
