What this country needs now

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

In his 1960 inaugural speech, President John F. Kennedy implored us to “don’t ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”

Well, it’s 2008 and while I certainly cannot speak for all Americans, I will address what I want government and the highest elected officials ought to do for me and toher hard working, tax paying individuals.  These musings are not necessarily original but are comprised of various appeals and ideas I have read over the past several months.

1.) Fight terroism but get out of Iraq.  The billions we spend on the war each day is crippling our economy and hyperextending our deficit.  The impact on terrorism is not defineable and therfore not worth the expense and the tragic loss of American lives.

2.) Find a way to offer some form and finance some form of national health care.  Whatever is implemented will be an improvement on those of us who have no health care coverage.

3.) Focus on fixing the country’s infrastructure.  Roads and bridges are in a putrid state is disrepair and states are grappling with the tsk of coming up with the money to fund the necessary repairs.  Some states are literally grinding up pavement in some rural areas and returning to gravel roads.  That’s retarded.  Fixing roads and bridges also creates jobs.

4.) Washington lobbyists are Satan reincarnate, but close.  There are lobbyists who perform needed functions in terms of providing Congressman with information but most of us are suspect of the smarmy back door dealings.  Make that process a lot more up front.

5.) Find a way to ease racial tension.  Do you realize how great, or greater this country would be without racism and prejudice?  No one entity can eliminate racism but the people who run this country need to work to ease the tension.

6.) If America wants to lead, then lead.   What’s going on in Darfur is unacceptable.  We are not in a position to be the world’s policeman but when we need to step up to the plate an exert our military and economic will we seem to shirk the responsibility.  The world allowed us to lead in World War II, they will again when they can trust us and our intentions.

These are but a few of what I think the country needs to do.  There are many other issues like ecology and crime but we need to start somewhere and by that I mean making some things a priority.

A little converse to Kennedy don’t you think? This is a laundry list of “do for me”. Me, me, me. This is perfect evidence to show that the party formerly of Kennedy has moved far away from him.

1 - Iraq is part of the terror war. It extends well beyond Afghanistan and Iraq. Better to spend our money there and in Afghanistan to foster democracy to improve the future of the region. Leaving incorrectly hands Iraq to Iran. Yeah, that helps.

2 - People should be in charge of their own policies and choices. National healthcare will bankrupt America. Taxes will be immense. Corruption and waste will be everwhere. Medical visits will be impossible to come by. Quality will go down hill. De-regulate associated healthcare. Support civil tort reform. This will be a start. Mommy government will be no help.

3 - The interstate system, I think, is under the jurisdiction of the Fed. Local roads should be controlled by local entities. The Federal government shouldn’t control EVERYTHING. Kennedy would agree.

4 - Lobbyists are bad. But they technically act as the voice of the people. People join groups and give money to help further their agenda. There is as much a right to a gun lobby as their is to an environmental lobby.

5 - Pollyanna much? You can’t just legislate emotions away. You can govern actions, but not feelings. And I think you should focus well beyond racism. Today there is so much hatred against blacks, whites, women, men, various religions, conservatives, liberals. We can no longer just disagree, we must hate. Hate Bush. Hate Catholics. Hate this or hate that. But you unfortunately can’t legislate that away.

6 - There are plenty of places around the world that we should be involved. Beyond that, there are a number of spots the world community should get invovled in. If the UN truly put pressure on the radical muslim world, terrorism will end. But the rest of the world doesn’t care. They wouldn’t follow us into Darfur or other regions. They certainly don’t go themselves. which proves my point that we certainly shouldn’t play high school popularity contest with what other nations think of us. If England or France had a higher moral ground they would be independently involved. But they aren’t. And they certainly don’t lay in bed at night worrying about what we think.

“In his 1960 inaugural speech, President John F. Kennedy implored us to “don’t ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.””

You misquoted one of the most famous quotes of all time, this isnt a good start.

“Well, it’s 2008 and while I certainly cannot speak for all Americans,”

Then dont.

“I will address what I want government and the highest elected officials ought to do for me and toher hard working, tax paying individuals.”

I am assuming your going to want something from them…

“1.) Fight terroism but get out of Iraq. ”

Play baseball, but use wiffleball bats, same stupid idea. We’ll get out of Iraq when the Iraqi’s can finish killing the jihadi’s.

“The impact on terrorism is not defineable and therfore not worth the expense and the tragic loss of American lives.”

Not defineable? Are you high? Attacks in Iraq are down over 70% in the past year (thanks to the surge that Dingy Harry Reid was doomed to fail) The lost province of Al-Anbar is about to be turned over to the Iraqi’s soon.

“2.) Find a way to offer some form and finance some form of national health care.”

You think healthcare is expensive now, wait till its free.

“Whatever is implemented will be an improvement on those of us who have no health care coverage.”

What about those who dont want coverage? Screw them, right?

“3.) Focus on fixing the country’s infrastructure.”

Hey, you got one right! Lets start with rebuilding Congress.

“4.) Washington lobbyists are Satan reincarnate, but close.”

English - FAIL!

“5.) Find a way to ease racial tension.”

Lets start by putting race hustlers like Sharpton, Jackson, Wright and Obama out of business.

“Do you realize how great, or greater this country would be without racism and prejudice?”

Thats my dream too, a country with no racist democrats!

“No one entity can eliminate racism but the people who run this country need to work to ease the tension.”

Obamessiah started 18 years late by leaving his church.

“6.) If America wants to lead, then lead.”

Except when it comes to fighting terrorism, then we should treat it like a crime, right?

“What’s going on in Darfur is unacceptable.”

Hey, the UN is on it, they will fix it right? I mean it is the UN after all, they will issue decree after decree until it is acceptable.

“We are not in a position to be the world’s policeman but when we need to step up to the plate an exert our military and economic will we seem to shirk the responsibility. ”

English - FAIL AGAIN!

“The world allowed us to lead in World War II, they will again when they can trust us and our intentions.”

I like that, they allowed us to save their a55es, thats one way to look at it.

“These are but a few of what I think the country needs to do.”

Thanks for chiming in Mr Helper.

Greg

You are the typical liberal wanting something for nothing. JFK’s words
“don’t ask what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.”, should ring true today. But just like anything else, libs have very short memories. You knee jerkers don’t even remember 9/11. The only attitudes you have is give me, give me, give me, tax the rich that busted their asses, but give me.

You want to get rid of a lot of racism? Put Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and Louis Farakan in their friggin place. When people stop listening to those racist jerks, something good just might happen. Start listening to people like Mike Steele, Condi Rice and Colin Powell.

Yep libs, just keep crying.

In keeping w/ my belief the next president of either party shall be a one-term president, let’s get ready for the next 4-5 years.

There shall be a widespread lowering of the standard of living for most Americans. Only the very poorest and the highly well-off shall not see
changes in their lives. There will be a continued transferral of wealth off-shore, by way of not only our purchases of petroleum, but the movement of profits from industries and businesses that have been legally purchased by non-American entities. In other words, we shall see on a larger scale what can be observed in small nations, where parts of their markets and commerce are in the hands of multi-nationals or corporations located elsewhere.

Retirement accounts will continue to shrivel, while being pounded by inflation. The holdings people have in homes and property will be downgraded in value, while the American dollar continues it’s downward spiral(the growing cost of oil is obviously tied to the declining worth of the dollar). We are already seeing this. I’d say by 2012 the American
populace will have been so bi***-slapped by a paycheck able to buy less
and less, the general mood of the day will make the current surliness look
winsome by comparison. Add to that more people less capable of affording
health care and the costs of energy, or buying homes, or paying for a child’s continuing education—

Yes, I stand by my statement the winner of the 2008 election will be a
one-term president. Unlike some here, the above predictions are based
not on ideological bias, but the sad facts on our collective fortunes
today. Bet your #$%?-!%#, I am SO glad I’m not an 18 or 20 old American
in 2008. Oh well….

And with a little Pixie dust and a heavy dose of Obamamessiah, these ideas will all come true! It shouldn’t take the Obamamessiah more than 5 minutes to enact every one of these golden wishes, and make everything perfect for everyone. And then Obamamessiah can fly to Tehran on his unicorn and bow down to Ahmadininutjob, who will be so impressed by the silver-tongued Obamamessiah that he’ll convert to loving America, just like Obamamessiah made Rev Wright do. And we’ll all have candy rainbows and cotton-candy clouds every day!! Rivers of chocolate! Lollipop stop signs! Candy bar trees! Talking animals! Just don’t mistake power lines for licorice!!

Mr. Jones, have you ever thought of using your grasp and flair with language(’ObamaMessiah’, ‘pixie dust’ and so on) in the creation of children’s literature? You could create tomes for inculcating the young into
your ideological/religious world view; perhaps a fairy tale where Dick Cheney
is Father Christmas?

I can see a glowing feature interview for you on FOXNEWS if you follow this suggestion, or a book-tour of white mega-churches…

Greg Gibson, you are a great American. Thank you for sharing your vision. Your comments are thoughtful and your reasoning is proper. Simply focusing on #1 can do so much towards the others that it all begins to seem possible. $300 million per day (conservative cost of Iraq war) will go a long way towards actually fighting terrorism, securing our nation, rebuilding our nation rather than destroying others, and providing health insurance for the uninsured.

if this tripe is what passes for great thinking in the US, we are in a poop-pot full of trouble. No wonder that Richard Danzig, who would likely be Obamamessiah’s national security advisor, recently stated that Winnie-the Pooh should be the basis for US foreign policy.

German-

You mean i should write a conservative version of “why mommy is a democrat?” I don’t know what white mega-churches you’re rambling about, perhaps The Obamamessiahs’s buddies Pfleger and Wright can help in that department
