Beware churches: The surest way to lose independence is to be in the government’s purse

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

So Barack Obama showed his religious audience he was comfortable talking their talk suggesting that the government could have a hand in helping church-based social services (Post-Dispatch, July 2, 2008.) The only thing I have to say about that is to the church organizations - remember that the person that holds the purse strings makes the rules. The government givith (money) and the government takith away (control.) If you want to lose your independence, just let the government get its hands on you.

This poor guy can’t get a break! First he was a Muslim, then when the press learned about his Christian pastor (Rev. Wright) it was determined he was better off being a Muslim. Then he was not patriotic because he didn’t wear an American flag lapel pin, then he was “another politician” for wearing a lapel pin. He puts forward the notion of faith-based assistance, and is accused of trying to control religion in America. Mr. Walter, may I be so bold to suggest that you and the rest of your flag-draped, made-in-China-”Remember-The-Troops”- metallic- ribbon-adorned, country/western-listening, gun-rack-in-the-back, dittohead, cross-carrying crackers are simply just yesterdays white sheeted BIGO_S! Whew! I should stop… I apologize if I’ve offended anyone.

Actually I focused on THIS comment of Mr. Walters: “The only thing I have to say about that is to the church organizations - remember that the person that holds the purse strings makes the rules. The government givith (money) and the government takith away (control.)”

It’s about time somebody actually SAID the above. THIS is the fundamental reason behind the establishment clause of the first amendment. It’s not about keeping the Church out of Government. It’s about keeping Government out of the Church.

There are an awful lot of (silent) Church-going people out there who don’t want any form of Government money for their schools, for their assistance programs, or for anything else. That includes Voucher programs, by the way. For the very reason cited: With Government money comes Government control…and I, as a citizen, wouldn’t have it any other way. I want to know where the money is going and what it’s being spent on. As Christian, the thought repels me.

Here you go Hs.

I am NOT happy with this. On one hand I can’t stand that he would go this route, on the other hand I have to recognize that a democratic candidate is actually doing something to try and get the evengelical vote. Oh, how I despise organized religion.

hs,

I, too, recognized the basic conflict between government assisted faith-based organizations and the First Amendment anti-establishment clause. Furthermore, I’m confident that Sen. Obama is aware that such a proposal would die on the Supreme Court steps. Pandering to the right carries no consequence, so long as some one else will shoot down the pledge. It is however, somewhat disingenuous. He can promise to place a statue of the baby Jesus in front of every courthouse, knowing that it will never materialize. Republicans do this all the time.

Commander: I’ve been waiting for the usual suspects to pile on and tell me how wrong I am about the first amendment, and how good a thing the ‘faith based initiative’ program is.

Here’s what I see in this small Illinois town I live in: The parochial schools use the public school buses to get their kids to school. On the face of it, no problem, right? BUT it also means that the parochial school follows a school day schedule, and a school year schedule (including snow days and teacher institute days) set by the public school board. Is the acceptance of public money (buses and drivers) profoundly affecting the educational program provided by the Catholic church? I would argue that it is. And that the loss of control of the Catholic school committee to run their school the way they might like to would only be the beginning if a voucher program appeared.

I have more examples, but I’ll stop there.

Obamma is like a lizard that changes color to blend in with whats at hand.He supported a ministry of hate white America for over 20 years, untill the news came out on what it was all about,he voted against welfare to work in Illinois after Bill Clinton signed that, but now he is for it,he out lefted Hillary on immediately pulling out of Iraq until people reminded him of the consequences,if the American public wises up before November he won’t carry a single one of the”57″ states he said he campaigned in.Wake up peopl before it becomes MUslim America LS

HAM,

Rev. Wright doesn’t hate White America, just the many evils of American government. Same as myself, I have truly grown to hate evil. And, there’s a whole lot of it here in America as it is in the world.
