The Post should know about historic failures in anticipating changing markets

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Wow, it is great to know that the Post Dispatch is on the side of the angels when it comes to trashing Chrysler in the ‘Failure in Fenton’ article of July 2nd about the upcoming layoffs. Funny I did not see the management of the Post Dispatch similarly castigated about the layoffs and early retirements that impacted employees at the Post Dispatch. Just in case you might have forgotten here are some of the recent headlines:

‘St. Louis Post-Dispatch Sheds 130 Jobs’ 11/01/2005

‘Post downsizes again after 60 more take buyouts’ 10/01/2007

‘Post-Dispatch to eliminate 31 positions’ 3/12/2008.

The Publisher of the Post Dispatch was quoted in regards to layoffs as saying ‘.. our business model is shifting a bit and we have to adjust with it’. But, when Chrysler does not anticipate a change in the market they are rebuked as ‘historic failures’ and scolded for saying their responsibility is to ‘make profits, not cars’. Guess what, if they don’t make a profit no one will have a job. But you know that, else you would not be doing layoffs at the Post Dispatch would you ?

OK Kevin, you’ve caught the Post-Dispatch Editorial Board eating dog droppings, so what’s new?

Let’s review :

Circulation is down.

Ad revenue is down.

The readership is leaving for alternative media by the thousands.

Hmmmm… what can we do to stop the bleeding?

I KNOW!

Let’s RAISE THE PRICES!!

That’s always a winner with readers! What better way to bring people back than to charge 33% more for something you already know they don’t want!

Perrrrfect.

It’s like trying to throw yourself on the floor… and MISSING.

ROTFL.

Laugh I thought I’d die.

Kevin…c’mon…regardless of the meaningless drivel of these two clowns in front of me, are you seriously comparing the shifting dynamics of today’s media/journalism business with the failure of the American automotive industry? You have to be a total duphous to not see the distinction. Forget the PD and your own bias or axe to grind for a moment. This is the situation. Chysler, Ford and GM have been sitting on their thumbs for 40 years trying to shove a piece of crap product up the American consumer. We’ve been told to buy American because it’s patriotic. But all we are offered are poorly designed, poorly assembled dinosaurs that are no more than rehashed relics of the bulgemobile age. And guess what Kevin…Toyota is about to light the burners and leave the American auto makers on the ash heap of history. Yes, I too have ordered my 2009 Prius and hope to take delivery in January if I am lucky.

Daimler couldn’t even turn the Chrysler mess around and dumped it as soon as possible. Stop looking for an anger outlet. The only one to blame is the American auto manufacturer and the American consumer who in blind loyalty put up with an inferior product too long.

As you say, ” Guess what, if they don’t make a profit no one will have a job.” But I’ll also remind you, if they don’t sell a car no one will have a job either.

If the liberals weren’t so adamant about not drilling then perhaps we wouldnt have this problem in the first place.

I totally understand Mac’s remarks. Here you have the ultra-liberal Post-Disgrace telling Chrysler what they are doing wrong and they can’t even fix their own problems. Perhaps you can show us articles written by the Post writers a year of 2 ago describing what would be happening today.

Let’s face it. Liberals have put us in this position. This wouldnt even be a subject of interest if this global warming, global climate change, or whatever it’s called today, was such a big liberal deal today.

Way to go libs! What’s next?

I have to weigh in on this. I live in a cul de sac where, twelve years ago, everyone got the paper(7 houses). I was the only one now and at least 6 to 10 times a year the paper is soaked or missing pieces. Requesting a new paper is ten levels deep on an automated call in line. Criticizing bad management?

This is a paper that now has its limited staff writers blogging (where the same 5 people spout snarky comments and alienate readers forever and a day) and supporting a web business model that consistently is no way to generate revenue. Plus! virtually everyone I know can’t stand the response time of this website and surf elsewhere now!

Criticizing bad management?

All I see in the form of ads are for Bernie M’s book or some other self-serving PD writer. Have a lot of paper space, do you? How offensive.

Newspapers are in trouble and the PD is one of the worst examples of bad management that has very little understanding of how to support the only newspaper in town.

Yes, the American Auto industry is backwards and deserves to be criticized for being an over-bloated example of corporate ignorance, but for the Post to criticize bad management is well, silly.

Thanks to the last call finally to your terrible customer support I have since stop getting your paper and don’t surf here anymore because it’s the silliest website of bad organization I have ever seen (except of course to criticize you all)

The American auto industry may have forgotten how to anticipate the market,
but the only paper in town has forgotten what a newspaper is.

lunar,
You ordered a Prius? Cool! Mine is a 2005. You are going to LOVE it! You will become addicted to trying to get the best gas mileage possible. Try to “glide” (no arrows on the Energy Monitor screen) as much as you can.

Lisa12:

For the really gas mileage conscious liberals, this little open air jewel has your Prius beat, hands down!

What a revolting development this is. Kevin writes a thoughtful and literate letter criticizing a Post editorial, and the rest of you proceed to sound off on the Post in general, on liberals, on gas mileage and on each other, rather than discussing the letter itself.

Perhaps none of you see anything offensive about using the Post’s free web site to call them names, but I believe Miss Manners would describe most of you as a pack of Philistines.
