What hasn’t been dumbed down?1

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

A reader’s letter printed on the Fourth of July questioned whether or not our nations patriotism has been “dumbed down”. Are you kidding? What hasn’t been dumbed down in America the last 30 years? Lawsuits have been won by people too stupid to drink hot coffee, ride public transportation or operate simple machinery. Television has become mindless voyeurism and game shows that challenge weight loss or intelligence at a fifth grade level. Pop music has devolved into rhythms and chords stolen from other actual songs, mixed with non-melodic mumbo-jumbo lyrics that glorify violence and debase society in general. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Michael Moore are revered as heroes, while President Bush, General Petraeus and Justice Roberts are scorned, mocked and ridiculed at every turn. You can burn the flag but you can’t smoke in a bar. Small business owners are taxed and regulated to death . We can’t drill for oil in our own country for fear of harming an area of the planet that no one lives, we can’t afford to pay teachers and illegal aliens and enemy combatants are afforded constitutional freedoms. Dumbed down? Duh…..

Yes sir Bob, and we can all thank the politically correct left for the dumbing down.

….Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Micheal Moore are revered as heroes? This is news to me. Adolescent girls look up to Brit and Paris until the next big thing comes along and grabs their attention and it would seem Mr. Moores movies don’t have quite the impact on people as you might perceive. Yes, there are a lot of useless shows and music floating around but so what? It’s entertainment, nothing more. If you want to complain about dumbing down things, why don’t you look at the ever falling rate of graduated scientists, doctors, and engineers in this country. Dumb people are easy to control and are very good at becoming complacent. You really think the powers that be want smart people with critical thinking skills running around all over the place? Puh-Lease. As the great Tim Wilson said, we are goin’ ta hell in a Dodge Viper. This is not soley a left or right wing conspiracy, it’s tentacles are far reaching into many aspects of our lives. As far as your iron label is concerned kdunlap, we don’t thin the herd anymore. In the days of old the dumb usually ended their own life by some stupid decision like ironing their clothes on their bodies. Survival of the fittest has long been gone. Personally, I wouldn’t mind it coming back for a bit.

Yes, everything has been dumbed down. That is why computers were SO much better in the 1960s.

JimmyRussell,

If you think survival of the fittest isn’t alive and well, check out the Darwin Awards website. Some people are as dumb as ever, and getting more creative at removing themselves from the gene pool. Bill Engval has also done some hysterically funny stuff about warning labels on products like hemorrhoid cream-”do not take internally”-because you know somebody sent them a letter. I agree about the dumbing down of the American population, and that the powers that be prefer it that way.I see way too many people who wouldn’t dream of questioning the status quo. They keep doing things the way they have always done them, then can’t understand why their circumstances don’t improve.Critical thinking skills are undervalued, so the herd mentality prevails. One can only hope that the current economic challenges will encourage more people to think outside the box(or to THINK, period) to come up with ways to deal with it instead of waiting for the government to tell them what to do or to bail them out.It is past time to raise the bar back to where it needs to be.People tend to live up or down to expectations, so the sooner we expect more, the sooner we might get it.

Bob a big part of it started when the schools started handing out diplomas for merly attending so as not to offend anyone,Colledges had to start giving remedial couses for those that couldn’t pass the entrance exams, the same rewards for the under achievers as for the one who did work hard, and then it extended to all society and the work place,no need to work hard or achiev, government is supposed to take care of all of it for you,no personal responsibility needed, the world owes you for being here mentality, and now the chickens come home to roost.
