A better way to get the kids in school

Instead of the principal of Beaumont High School wasting the taxpayers’ money riding around the neighborhood in a fire truck, shouting over a loudspeaker that school begins on Aug. 18, perhaps he should hire a  few big, burly truant officers.

Building principals in the City of St. Louis don’t have the authority to hire truant officers. Besides, being $30 million in the hole, the math will not add up. Kudos to Travis Brown for making the effort.

Years ago they gave out TV’s if kids came on the first day. What happened to that promotion?

Maybe if welfare payments were partially based on school attendance (you make your kids go to school, you get more) some of these parents would actually care and make their kids go to school.

Bribery is not caring.

JD - I didn’t say it would make them care about their KIDS (obviously if they cared about their kids they would already be making them go to school and wouldn’t have to be bribed). But they do care about money. I deal with these people everyday and regardless, you are paying one way or another. At least if they are in school they are not out stealing cars, burglarizing, etc.
