Message to the president: Made in the USA
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
I have a message for the new President. I’ve been preaching it since I became a Teamster in 1970. Here it is.
MADE IN USA MEANS JOBS IN USA
Timothy C Donahue
St. Louis

Amen to that!
Can’t argue with that.
Does that include the Chevy Aveo (South Korea) and the Pontiac G8 (Australia)? How about the Mazda6 built in Michigan, or the Toyota Corolla built alongside the Pontiac Vibe in California? Where does one draw the line?
Tim,
I am also a Teamster. One of the Budweiser drivers losing his job during the strike in the city in ‘05 & ‘06.
Everytime there is an election, I don’t care if it is local, state, or national, the Teamsters and other unions come out and say who they are going to back for office. You get the paper in the mail like I do.
Go back and look at who the union has endorsed for president since 1970.
Does the name Bill Clinton and N.A.F.T.A bring back anything?
The thing we all hear when voting on a contract is, “vote with your head, not with your heart.
Just because the Teamsters say they back a candidate doesn’t mean they are right.
The guy just sworn into office is like the Pied Piper and those who believe in him and follow him will drown like rats.
Tim… Where were you when I was selling pocket billiard tables made in the USA, but those U.S. auto workers kept buying the ones made in China or South America? Now, the domestic billiard industry is all but no more. I don’t begrude anyone wanting to get the best deal, but the large majority of these imported tables were cheaply made and nowhere close to the quality of the tables I was selling. People should reward with their money the company making the best quality product, whether it’s made in the USA, Uruguay or Estonia. Of course, this is so long as the playfield is kept level and no workers are exploited, including children.
I couldn’t agree with you more Mr. Kozlowski. Clinton’s support of NAFTA was a HUGE mistake. Another mistake of the Clinton administration was giving most favored nation status to China. That opened the flood gates for their cheap products to flood our market as well as companies like Wal-Mart to persue a race to the bottom in wages and benefits. However he was still a better labor president the President Bush would have been had he gotten a second term.
The Teamsters supported Ronald Reagan in 1980. Shortly after beating Jimmy Carter in a landslide he broke the PATCO union and replaced them with scabs. In doing so he showed corporations that you could bust union strikes by hiring striker replacements. You have seen the effects of that first hand in the 05 -06 strike.
Bubba… You support unions?
yeppers, always. I agree with you about unions supporting American made products. Even when they cost more. I am sorry to hear about the pool tables. There is a race to the bottom and too many times we can look in the mirror to see the cause of the problems
Do you support Capitalism or Socialism, though?
thats a loaded question. What we have in the USA is not really capitolisim. Corporate America likes to privitize the profits but socialize the losses. When times are good they pocket all profits. when they are bad they spread the losses whether due to bad mangement or economic swings to the people via tax bailouts.
