No need to wait for the mailman: No stimulus checks this year
A five hundred dollar tax credit for individuals or one thousand dollars for couples. Let’s see, that comes out to be about nine dollars a week for an individual or nineteen dollars a week for couples. Be still my heart.
It’s funny but I just cannot get the picture out of my mind of all the people who went down to the Arch grounds the day “President Elect” Barack Obama came to town and promised them he was going to take them to the promised land. That all their troubles and worries were going to be over and they would now be able to sleep at night.
I would have sworn he was riding a cloud as if it were Ascension Thursday and the tongues of the Holy Ghost were above the heads of all in attendance. We are saved.
There’s your stimulus package. There are no stimulus checks being sent to people this year, so stop looking for the mailman. Big business, Wall Street, and the Auto makers got it all. Tax breaks are fine for people if you have a job. But what can you do with an extra nine dollars a week? Does this mean they will tax people less on unemployment benefits? I doubt it. Does it mean you will get more in food stamp assistance. No. If you get unemployment benefits, it reduces your food stamp allotment.
This is the guy people thought were going to save the country. They voted for him and before he is even sworn in, he has proven it was a words. Now you have to live with your decision. An eight hundred billion dollar stimulus package sounds good, but someday, someone is going to have to pay for and repay all of this.

Kool-Aid drinker….I mean…JK,
Barry hasn’t even been sworn in and you’re blaming him?!?! Goodness gracious. Blaming the guy who hasn’t even been sworn in but giving a pass to President Mission Accomplished?!?!
At least this stimulus package is going to the US and not Iraq, right? Or Haliburton…
My god, man, what color is the sky in your world? At least humor us and blame the appropriate folks…not the man who has yet to get the new family dog from the DC ASPCA.

That’s plumb silly, Lester! If one realistically recognizes that $9.50 per week aint gonna automatically solve all the financial problems of the entire American middle class makes them Kool-Aid drinker? You take yourself far too seriously.
This “stimulus package” talk does sound a little ridiculous. But let us not forget the $600 stimulus Bush wasted last year.
Historically stimulus packages don’t work.
It is still retarded to condemn a man’s next 4 years BEFORE he is even inaugurated. Does it also make sense to base a man’s Presidency on one policy?
………………………I hope Obama never sends stimulus checks to the general population. Remember what happened to gas prices the last time the government did that. Thanks but no thanks………..
Lester,
Is your middle name Forest?
Icon,
No $9.50 per person does not solve the problem. The problem is people like Jim and I suspect you are looking for one program to solve all the problems. What was the last stimulus rebate? I think it was $300, I am unsure because
I made to much to qualify. People jumped up and down and said that this would kick start the economy. Bush said that we just needed to give it a chance, yet that was just $6 a week. So Obama is offering a 50% increase.
I am not a fan of stimulus checks. You give $300 to someone during a recession and they are more likely to either save it or pay down existing debt. By theory there is nothing wrong with this practice and it is even wise. However, remember what a stimulus check is suppose to do, it is to stimulate new buying in the economy. If you use the money to pay existing debt or saving it for an emergency, then you are not accomplishing your goal.
To all posters. You best listen to Bob. He is one of the far left nut cases, that does all and knows all. Just read his posts. In other words, a freakin know it all!

I do not need to know it all…I just need to know more than you.
Since all you can think of doing is posting insults, it proves that I know more than you. But then any rock out in the yard would know more than you.
The stimulus checks that were mailed out to people last year were $600.00 an individual, $1200 per couple.
It was not one week after Obama was elected when I heard people at the White Castle on Hebert & North Florissant wondering when they would be getting their new checks. The government started something and now people expect this every year.
A Presidents “policy is his legacy.” His policy and legacy dictates how he wants to be remembered.
In the first place, we were never supposed to be in Iraq. We were supposed to be in Afghanistan going from cave to cave looking for Fred & Wilma.
We have spent seven years in these countries and what has been “accomplished”?
As soon as we leave Iraq, civil war will break out. Obama promised a timely withdrawal of our troops from Iraq. He never said anything about putting 30,000 more in Afghanistan.
Remember how the Soviet Union got their asses kicked in there.
Think about all the money this country has spent over the last seven years with this two front war.
I’m not supporting George Bush. He is the worst President ever.
I’m criticizing the incoming President because he said and promised one thing, and now is doing another.
Think how all the money spent in Iraq could have helped the infrastructure of this country. How many jobs would this have created?
I for one am sick of the United States giving or spending money or support ing countries like Isreal while ours is going down the toilet.
Play nice kids.
Jim
I agree with you on most of what you say.
I never supported the Iraq war. I did not believe that Saddam was such a nice guy, but I just never thought we would get the bang for the buck. I did and still believe that we wasted manpower and resources that could have been better used against terrorist.
I disagree with you on Afghanistan. There is a direct line between 9/11 and Afghanistan. Obama had said that front of the war against terrorist was in Afghanistan. So I believe it was clear that he would pursue the war in Afghanistan.
I do believe that you are correct that people heard stimulus and just assumed that it would include individual checks. Obama briefly flirted with that idea, but he has always made clear that he favored tax reduction on the middle class.
Here is something that Obama will get blamed for, the CBO has come out and said that the current budget will be our first Trillion dollar deficit. With the cost of Iraq/afghanistan, the Financial bailout, and the falling revenues they see no way that we cannot have a Trillion dollar deficit.
