Memo to state: Keep the $20 and put Missourians to work

I just read that the Missouri Legislature’s Republican leadership is turning down over $150 million in federal subsidies, so that it can give Missouri taxpayer a slightly larger tax refund, this year. This doesn’t sound too crazy, until you find out that this would mean the loss of over three thousand Missouri jobs.

In the worst economic crisis, since the Great Depression, Missouri Republicans seem to be more than happy, to put even more people out of work. Incredible. This is nothing more than a party putting ideology over the interests of the citizens they are paid to represent.

If any Missouri legislators happen to read this, keep the extra $20 you want to send me. I’d rather cook a meal at home than put people out of work.

Just how did you determine that 3,000 jobs would be lost if Missouri turned down some of the federal “porkulus”? I fail to see how any jobs would be lost. Using your “logic”, I send my money to Washington which in turn sends it back to Missouri (minus a big percentage)and that’s supposed to save jobs???. Why not keep it here to start with??? If I get to keep more of my own money, I and millions of other Missourians can spend it like we want, which usually helps create jobs. Hooray for the Republican majority in the Legislature for turning down this bribe! As AIG found out, when the feds give you money, there are lots of strings attached. And, they are usually more distasteful than one cares to stomach. No thanks Nobama, Missouri will get along just fine doing things it’s own way.

Glenn, can you tell me how people lose jobs if we have more money to spend? You need to get off those websites with the Democrat talking points. Could you help me understand how it is that politicians know how to spend your money better than you do? Do you have a remote idea how the economy works?

Superdave and Frank

I forget what the tax break will be in Obamas tax plan. I believe it is about $10 a week or $520 a year. The right wing is on here yelling about how the $10 a week is nothing but a joke, but here you are touting how $20 for the entire year is going to put money in people pocket and stimulate the economy.

So let us get this straight $20 for the year from the Republicans stimulates, but $520 a year from Obama does not stimulate.

Talk about someone who needs to get off the party talking points, I believe you need to look in the mirror.

I dont have a problem at all with the tax cuts. In fact I think it should be more. However Bob, I believe they were complaining about the amount of tax cuts compared to the phony parts of the Porkulus plan. The tax cuts should be greatly increased. Let people have more of their own money to spend and not some jerk in Washington.

History shows that tax cuts have been the answer over and over.

I think you need to think about your responses instead of assuming things. You know what assuming does, dont you. You assumed wrong this time, AGAIN!

You are assuming that they were complaining about the size of the tax cuts in proportion to the rest of the bill. You do know what assuming does don;t you.

At no point do they make that connection. So you assume incorrectly again.

Here are the latest figures on how well Missouri is doing taking care of its citizens:

In 1999 - 344,000 uninsured in our state
In 2009 - 815,000 uninsured in our state

This indicates a 137% increase in 10 years. Missouri has one of the lowest tax rates of any state in this Country.

Missouri has one of the strictest eligibility standards for Medicaid in this Country. In our state, a single mother with 2 kids can not earn more than $3,700 a year to qualify for medicaid. That is about 1/5th of the Federal Poverty Level or about $71 /per week.

To you neocons, what should this Mother do? Try to earn a living working many hours to pay the bills and not be a welfare receipient and do without Health Insurance or only earn $71 a week so that she qualifies for medicare. What a choice!

Spare me the lame excuses, she should of made better decisions, it is her own fault for having children, not my problem she just wants a handout, etc. Your guys are incapable of real compassion or to grasp the reality of those Mother’s who find themselves in a inpossible situation. You concern yourself more with the unborn in the womb or cells in a petri dish than the living breathing human beings in this Country. What a disgrace!

Our Great Missouri Republican Leader is a arrogant pompus ass that is out of touch with reality. The Republicans of this state continue their my way or the highway mentality since they control the House and Senate. Having Jay Nixon will help, but the waste of tax dollars on meaningless bills and their neocon agenda will continue to keep Missouri ranking last in almost every catergory. Keep up the good work you jokers!

Glenn, they can keep my $20 also and use it for their much earned Spring Break. Give it the servers/waitresses only making $2.15/ an hour plus tips.

Sorry Bob, but you are wrong. The Republicans were upset the this Porkulus bill had very little in tax breaks and mostly about Pork.

Also, you are also assuming that Frank and I agree with all that Republicans are doing. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Personally, I dont want this government to do anything but get the hell out of our way so Americans can bring our country back. Its the damn government that wasnt doing their job. Big Shock There! They are the reason we are in this mess anyway. So, the people that screwed it up is supposed to fix it? AIG is a classic example. When will we ever learn that government is not the answer, government is the problem! Where have I heard that before???!!!

Were did I say that I thought you agreed with everything that the Republicans were doing? My posting was on a single item and you chose to expand it to wider statement.

As usual you take a narrow statement and expand it to meet your desires as to what to talk about. I know the Republicans were upset about the bill, so what is new if its not their bill they will get upset about it. You just had to read many of the comments through the past months and there were plenty of people on your side of the aisle that were complaining about how $520 a years was not going to help, then to read you and Frank talk about being able to spend the $20 a year was ridiculous. Not once did you say during that period hey guys I wish it was more but at least we are getting $520. But the moment the Republicans gave you $20 you were there to defend it.

yes you say AIG shows how government can screw things up. Yet you fail to understand that the government screw up came after private industry really screwed the whole thing up because government was not looking over their shoulders. Then wanted to reward under achievement by giving themselves bonuses. In other words they wanted to say under achievement is now the new norm in business and deserves an award.

So, you want government to fix it? Please explain what government has done well. I am anxious to know. Never forget that government is responsible for this mess to begin with. The problem now is that the very people that screwed it up now want to fix it. That sounds like a plan! A very bad one. Here you are making excuses for government problems.

You made this comment;
“So let us get this straight $20 for the year from the Republicans stimulates, but $520 a year from Obama does not stimulate.”

Please point out where I said that $520 a year doesnt stimulate. I must have missed that somewhere. How about $3,500 per person to stimulate. Of course, thats for people that PAY TAXES!

You see that is where you go wrong, you say $3500 per person will stimulate. It only stimulates if you spend it. people are not spending, so it does not stimulate.

Normally saving is a good thing, but not if what you want is them to spend to stimulate. So your logic is faulty.

I have never been a fan of tax cuts for this recession to fix the problem. I am also do not believe those rebate checks work.

It is extremely simple and you seem to miss the point we have to get people spending. People do not spend if they are afraid they will need the money next week. So they do not spend and you could give them $10000 and it will not stimulate.
