A parting shot at the other Mississippi on the Mississippi
I am leaving the Metro East for another part of the country. Some brief political exit comments follow.
I have lived in this area, close to St Louis but part of Illinois (thank god) for 11 years, due to my work in St Louis. During this time, the conservative Republican rule over Missouri has become quite pervasive. It is a mean-spirited, spiteful, nasty conservatism that I see from across the river. Health care is denied to our poorer friends; the mean-spirited Medicaid cut was both wasteful and nasty. University students are shafted in terms of state support; three years ago, University of Missouri support was cut by an identical amount of an out-of-state business tax cut. The idiotic term limits mean that truly unpleasant politicians like Cynthia Davis are allowed out in public far more than is safe for normal Americans. The Republicans are about to nominate a compassionate conservative, Roy Blunt, for Senate. He is such a family values man that he dumped his old wife and picked up a new shiny one to comfort him in his old age.
I call Missouri “Mississippi on the Mississippi”. Rather than emulating a successful progressive state like Illinois, Missouri is heading for the social climate of the former slave south. The business climate may be better, but who in their right mind would want to live in such a dismal swamp? When are Miseryans gonna wake up and dump these Republicans?

Taking your share of Illinois’ debt with you, are you? That’s right, tell us how it’s done, show us all of the wisdom of your state’s fiscal superiority. (I’m not a Republican)
After Blago, Rev. Wright, Bill Ayers, Chicago-style politics and a state that is right behind California in red ink, and you call Illinois progressive?
I hope you’re moving to Minnesota so you’ll feel right at home in a state that elects a professional wrestler for Governor and a clown for Senator.
Good bye Paul, and turn out the lights when you leave.
I agree with Paul. Of course, Missourian’s will only be offended, rather than take a hard look at your comments.
thanks and good luck.
Frank… Didn’t Illinois vote Democratic in 2000, 2004 and 2008? Now, how is that not progressive?
As for your claim that Franken is a `clown,’ you couldn’t be more wrong. Have you watched the man in interviews? I once saw Franken on Jeopardy, and he blew away the competition, which included Bob Woodward (to jog your brain, that would be Woodward from the series of stories on Watergate). No, there is no way you can equate Franken with being a `clown.’ Is it quite possible that you look like Franken and you’ve been looking in the mirror?
Hey Paul,
I’ll bet you miss our dime cheaper a gallon gas verses what you’d pay in IL. Yea, I’m sure all of MO is bad.
BTW, in Illinois, progressive = broke.
Paul
You said “Rather than emulating a successful progressive state like Illinois…”
Please enlighten all of us, and expound on Il. success.
Is it being $9 Billion in debt?
Is it because you have the most corrupt political machine in the US?
Is it because the corrupt mob style political machine is now in DC?
Why work in Mo., if Il. is so fantastic?
Sounds to me, you will not be happy where ever you move, since liberals are alway pissed at something and are NEVER happy. Hey, go to Cuba, with the best health care and everything that is up to date.
Hey Paul
Couple more questions.
Did you purchase all your gasoline in Il., or did you buy it across the river where it was cheaper?
Where are you moving to? Ca. would be a good choice for you.
Did you add a few $’s to your tax bill each year, or just pay what the state said? If you didn’t add any, shame shame on you.
“emulating a successful progressive state like Illinois”
Makes me wonder what you definition of failure is………….
Paul, are you renting a UHaul or hiring movers to carry your egotistical, progressive, attitude on your move. Please don’t leave your leftist propaganda chest and government bible behind.
By the way, Paul, what type of taxpayer funding pays your bills? Is it a direct government job, contracted government work, or grants and subsidies? Surely backwoods MO didn’t provide gainful private enterprise employment.
If you’re moving anywhere other than Washington, D.C. you should reconsider. That will be the only place with any financial “progress” in the future.
I hear ya Mr Thompson. If I lived in a corrupt, bloated, bankrupt pig sty like Illinois I’d want to deflect attention too. You can have your progressive paradise, thank you very much.
