A parting shot at the other Mississippi on the Mississippi
I am leaving the Metro East for another part of the country. Some brief political exit comments follow.
I have lived in this area, close to St Louis but part of Illinois (thank god) for 11 years, due to my work in St Louis. During this time, the conservative Republican rule over Missouri has become quite pervasive. It is a mean-spirited, spiteful, nasty conservatism that I see from across the river. Health care is denied to our poorer friends; the mean-spirited Medicaid cut was both wasteful and nasty. University students are shafted in terms of state support; three years ago, University of Missouri support was cut by an identical amount of an out-of-state business tax cut. The idiotic term limits mean that truly unpleasant politicians like Cynthia Davis are allowed out in public far more than is safe for normal Americans. The Republicans are about to nominate a compassionate conservative, Roy Blunt, for Senate. He is such a family values man that he dumped his old wife and picked up a new shiny one to comfort him in his old age.
I call Missouri “Mississippi on the Mississippi”. Rather than emulating a successful progressive state like Illinois, Missouri is heading for the social climate of the former slave south. The business climate may be better, but who in their right mind would want to live in such a dismal swamp? When are Miseryans gonna wake up and dump these Republicans?
Paul Thompson
Belleville

Wow, I’m not even sure where to start. Paul, you are as clueless as they come. I live in IL and I think that Missouri is heads above the political crap machine we have on the east side of the river. Keep up the good work MO.
Granted that Paul should probably have held his thoughts on this the fact is we pay a lot less in state taxes than you Mizzourauns.
Happy in Illinois
Yes you do, but you make it up and surpass it, with the higher real estate tax, sales tax, gasoline tax and lord only knows, what other taxes. A co-worker moved from Belleville to Pevely, Mo. 2 years ago. Bought twice the house and the real estate tax and personal property tax combined, was $700 less than just the real estate was in Il.
You just stay happy in Il, along with Rev Wright and Louis Farakan and all the mob like corruption of your politico’s. You should be proud.
In Mizzuorra I would pay personal property tax on my cars of well over $700. You get what you pay for. We pay a lot for our politicians. You elect hayseeds and bible thumping idiots. You should open your pockets a little and buy a better class of thieves.
Happy in Illinois
Jay Nixon and Claire McCaskill are democrats. Don’t care for either one. I am a conservative, but do not attend any church, so there goes your bible thumping theory.
magnum it’s guys like you that give mizzourrians their reputation for being stupid. Did I mention democrats or republicans? NO. Did I mention you? No. Considering the defective gene pool your state has to build from it’s not surprising at all that the place is backwards.
Happy in Illinois
You are the one that is STUPID.
Bible thumper = far right
hayseeds = conservative or republican
You need to go back to Rev Wrights so called church.
magnum what is wrong with you? The welfare check didn’t come in today so you have to stay home and play on your mom’s computer, right? Or is it your cousin’s computer? Or is your mom your cousin? Or do you even know who your mom is? You people are something over there. I’m just having a nice discussion about taxes and you personally attack me. It must be true what I’ve heard. After 12 noon it’s hard to find a sober man in Mizzourra. It’s getting warm out there today so why don’t you run along now and go play in the cement pond.

Grow up!
Dittohead in MO -
Already grown up so you probably have no interest in me anyway. Good bye.
