A climatologist and earth scientist was explaining the relationship between CO2 gasses and climate change.

-Her model was that there is a .038 CO2 level naturally, that man’s contribution to this was around .00023. She went on to say that it would be comparable to dropping one droplet of hot water every 3 days into a 10,000 liter tub of cold water. In other words, no measurable effect.

-She went on to say that the relationship between CO2 and temperature change was a reverse osmosis effect. Simply, when the sun warms the atmosphere, more CO2 is created, not the reverse as global warmists would have us believe.

Superdave: actually, the next 20 years looks pretty good for GE and other energy equipment suppliers (Most of whom are overseas, but that’s a whole ‘nother can of worms). The fact is that huge amounts of money need to be spent on energy infrastructure over the next 10-20 years. The biggest open secret of the energy business is that the existing infrastructure of plants, transmission lines, and distribution systems is wearing out, and the decisions about what the next generation will look like are being made, right now. I have read studies that said if the electrical grid that we currently have was brand new and continued pumping out at maximum capacity, that within 10 years we will be far short of our needs.

Everything is moving to using more electricity at the moment. PC’s to servers to mainframes are leading the charge. A more powerful computer uses more electricity. Modernize a factory and you use more electricity. Buy something new for the home and there is a good chance it will need more electricity. If electric power cars take off then there will be a boom in the demand for electricity. Look at Bill Gates House. You can wear a small badge. As you go from room to room the badge is read and the lights are adjusted to how you like it and if you like music the correct music starts playing. If each home has just 10% of what Gates has in his home then electrical demand would spike.

So Ge and other providers of the equipment are looking forward to bright futures. Not only because as you pointed out the current system is aging and needs to be replaced, but also the additional demand for electricity will fuel the coffers for GE.

The reason everything is down for GE is the uncertainty of the economy. Once that turns around and the demand for electricity goes back up, then GE will recover. At the same time the cost will be passed on to the consumer. So what is good for GE is not necessarily good for the consumer.

superdave, to bring it back to a discussion about global warming, reading your comments suggests to me that you believe 2 things, and that those 2 things prove that it’s all a hoax.

First, you argue that because the research is funded by those who stand to profit from a particular finding, then the research is tainted. Really? It seems that for most of the last 10 years, the bulk of the research has been funded by government agencies that have been led by figures who WERE deniers, and yet the published results have been dominated by findings that it’s real. At a larger level, you suggest that a profit motive taints the research. Doesn’t that suggest that to you science should be a communist/socialist enterprise?

Second, you argue that because the numbers are so small (a few parts per million) they MUST not be significant. Dave, have you read the research, understood the test protocols, and developed this conclusion independently? Have you, personally, read anything about HOW that conclusion was arrived at? You argue that even if atmospheric CO2 IS increasing, there is no proof that human activity is leading to the change. Really? What about the isotope studies that show that the proportion of the particular carbon isotopes in coal is increasing in the atmosphere? The only way those carbon isotopes can increase in the atmosphere is by the combustion of coal.

I could go on.

Okay, I have to give it up. Man-made global warming is a left-wing hoax. Sure the earth’s average temperature has been rising steadily for over forty years now, but so what? We’ll manage. If we get rid of carbon dioxide, how will trees live? If our trees die, what will happen to humans?

I’m against the climate bill because there is NO proof that man is actually causing the increase in temperatures, and there is also no proof that carbon dioxide is the culprit in this warming trend. Carbon dioxide is an abundant gas that is absorbed by trees and exhaled by all mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Are we going to start getting taxed for breathing more? Are runners and athletes going to pay more taxes because they breath out more carbon dioxide? The earth has been warming and cooling for millions of years. What makes anyone think that our knowledge of recorded climate history (roughly 100 years)is enough to make staunch conclusions about how to deal with the problem?

This whole man made global warming scam is about MONEY! It’s another way to scare people into volunteering to pay more taxes to “fix” this so-called warming problem. However, no one really knows how to “fix” the problem, so our government is telling us that we have to TAX carbon dioxide output to solve the problem. It’s basically an easy way for politicians, governments and newly formed GREEN corporations to exploit tax payers and put the blame on industries which emit large amounts of carbon dioxide (ie power plants, factories, farms, etc. This is truly a scam of ultimate propotions to make the governments around the world more powerful while taking away rights of the individual.

Yes Juanita, it might be a real problem. However, even this article in Discover Magazine does nothing but speculate about the past and how the “ice sheets” are melting at an alarming rate. How do scientists know what led up to the last ice age? What melted the last ice age? There were very few carbon emissions produced by man 10,000 years ago - how in the hell did the glaciers covering half of North America melt?

This Climate Change issue is about one thing and one thing only…MONEY. Cap and trade will do NOTHING to thwart the USA, China, India, Russia, the majority of South America from emitting carbon emissions…it only makes money off of the emissions by taxing the corporations emitting carbon dioxide. The corporations pass these costs onto the tax paying consumer and voila! Last week it was revealed that the EPA refused to include a report by one it its own investigators, a man named Carlin, because said report indicated that the earth is no longer warming, period. But, lets suspend reality, and assume that man made global warming is real. Put this absurd “cap and trade” bill to the test used by many successful businessmen. “How much will it cost, who will pay, and will it work?” Well, we all know it will cost trillions, and you and I and every productive employee and consumer will pay. There is noone else. If you believe this nonsense that the corporations will pay, you probably believe your employer pays half of you social security contribution. Of course, it won’t work. Where will the industries go that are subject to this huge tax? All that can, will got to China, India, etc, of course costing us what is remaining of our manufacturing industry, and therefore, millions of more jobs. Gaucho has it right, a huge money grab. But, furthermore, part of the planned destruction of the private sector.

Somebody pointed out that ice that floats on water does not change the volume of the water…this is absolutely true. (and is something that has been known as a basic physical fact for centuries) However, the Antarctic and Greenland glaciers are NOT floating on the water. They are sitting on land. When THEY melt, the entrained water will wind up….duh…wait for it…in the OCEANS. And, there is a LOT of water involved in those thousands of cubic miles of ice.

If you want to try to understand just how much carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere, how much there was a couple hundred years ago, and how much there is now, just look at the existing data.

There is no doubt that carbon levels have jumped tremendously in the last fifty years. Now, is it caused by human activity or cow farts? Are there that many more cows? Right now were right at about 390 ppm. Fifty years ago, it was just above 300ppm. For the last 250 years before that, it was never above 300ppm.

I know I’m waisting my time with this explaination. If you don’t want to believe that humans have severely impacted the environment, you won’t. As I’ve said, many times before, facts confuse the far right and only make them believe misinformation even more strongly.

Can’t you even consider the economic sense of exploring renewable energy? “Drill baby drill,” doesn’t solve our energy problems, it just puts more oil onto the world market for the highest bidder to consume. It’s not our oil. It belongs to the company who pays for the drilling rights and licensing to get the oil.

Maybe solar and wind, as it is today, will not provide all of our energy needs, but science and invention should make it much more efficient if we just put some of our energy demand into that platform. I’m using your language, free market stuff. Has the oil and coal industry sewn up the legislative process just like the health insurance industry with millions of dollars to prohibit innovation, so that monopolies can retard growth?
