National Day of Service is the best he can do?
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Now that our first “National Day of Service and Remembrance” has passed, it’s time to ask what exactly President Obama was thinking in issuing such a weenie proclamation. Muslim terrorists kill some 3,500 people in surprise attacks in this country, and the best Obama can come up with is that we need to perform more public service?
While public service is a good thing, it has absolutely nothing to do with the 9/11 remembrance. Instead, how about a National Day of Remembrance and Resolve? Resolve that we as a nation will recognize and name our enemy — which is radical Islam — and do everything in our power to protect America from future attacks and hunt down those who seek to do us harm. But that’s at odds with Washington’s politically correct view of such things, where the words “Muslim,” “Islam” and even “terrorist” can no longer be spoken. A “remembrance” that doesn’t truly remember what happened and why is meaningless, and an insult to the victims.
I’m old enough to remember the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor (where fewer died than on 9/11). It quickly became the rallying cry for victory in the Pacific — “Remember Pearl Harbor!” The only “service” we were asked to perform was to contribute to the war effort. We could use that kind of resolve today.
Unfortunately, all of this is par for the course with an administration that seems more interested in punishing our protectors for their alleged offenses than in protecting us from terrorists. Does anyone feel safer under Obama than they did under President Bush?
God help us, for this administration can’t be counted on to do it.

Gee Doug, not everyone can go out and join the Army–nor should they. Seems to me asking his fellow countrymen to work in their communities to make them a better place is a good thing.
I guess you preferred George W. Bush’s call for Americans to “go shopping”?

“I guess you preferred George W. Bush’s call for Americans to “go shopping”?”
I believe the entire context was for us not to cower in fear behind the furnace in the basement, continue our lives as usual including shopping. Much of our economy is dependent on shopping and without encouragement, leftists would still be peeing their pants behind the furnace.
“Does anyone feel safer under Obama than they did under President Bush?”
Yes, most assuredly yes!
I feel safer because Obama is punishing the CIA interagators for protecting us from further Islamic attacks. America should be held accountable for defending itself. We need more attacks on America according to the rabid anti-America Democrats that continue to post their hate and filth on this site. The only observation and conclusion that can possibly be reached is that Obama would rather make excuses for Muslims instead of protecting America. We elected a poor excuse for a president.
–The poseur President finally found something he’s good at…

–It’s probably best, considering the reception he got from the Veterans the last time he came before them, and considering he probably believes the same as Van Jones and Rev. Wrong.
It’s not what Bush said (”go shopping”) I’m fine with that. I just wish he had also used the bully pulpit to encourage Americans to volunteer and work in their communities. But he didn’t, and now Obama is. Is that so wrong? We are still keeping our eyes out for those who try to harm us (remember the President ordered the killing of the 3 Somali pirates who had kidnapped Americans on that vessel) but the spirit of America is about more than just punishing our enemies. It’s about helping out those who need it. I fear for the day when to do the latter is considered “wussy”.
skahtt(ology?),
–There’s 364 days to do that, there is one 9-11.
So let me get this straight. Bush and Cheney use 9-11 to start a war against Iraq, who had nothing to do with 9-11, that cost thousands upon thousands of lives without making our country safer and they are considered “heroes”.
But Obama recognizes those who were inspired by 9-11, who saw the firefighters and police officers who ran into burning buildings to save their fellow Americans, and wanted to make their country and their world a better place however they could and that is somehow offensive to you?
–No, you misunderstand, in fact I wish that’s what he would do everyday. I’ll even buy him a pair of “whites”, hell, I’ll buy him a truckload of whites, if he promises to go into the painting business. Like I said, he finally found something he’s good at.
Mr. Kneibert,
I’m not quite old enough to remember the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, but I’m certainly aware of some of the domestic consequences. Some Americans used the attack to justify swindling Asian Americans out of their homes, their businesses, and their basic human rights, regardless of true ancestry. Some were persecuted simply for “looking Japanese.” A similar reaction resulted from the aftermath to the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Some self-righteous Americans took it upon themselves to “defend” the country from anyone who looked like a Moslem. This included Indian Sikhs, Polynesians, and even native Americans. It requires a special talent to provide for the defense by infiltrating terrorist cells and preemptively foiling their nefarious plots. It is a special talent not evident in the general populace–we’re simply not very good at it. I would prefer the general citizenry focus their attention on more benign pursuits, like public service and leave defense up to the professionals. And yes, I feel much safer under a President who tempers action with reason.
