Post-Dispatch spoils a secret (taxes pay for government services)

Have the cannons of Journalistic ethics been abandoned?  Do the editorial staff and reporters of the Post-Dispatch recognize what the ramifications are when they shed light on a “secret” that has existed for over 50 years!

Kevin McDermott in his front page, above the fold lead article Monday thought that he was writing a fine expose about the stupidity of the Illinois legislature. Mr. McDermott shed light on the impact of Illinois having raised taxes on booze, beer and wine by over 90% effective tomorrow.  Your reporter even mentioned the disparity in fuel taxes between Missouri and Illinois.

I wish Mr. McDerMott had kept his little secret quiet.  Missouri is grasping for funds to pay for basic education for our kids.  Our roads and infrastructure even with Federal Stimulus funds cannot fix the ditches on Interstate 70, 44, 55 etc.  Now the only thing saving our state, the dirty little secret has been revealed on the front page of the Post.

People from Illinois flock to Missouri gasoline stations to buy gas, cigarettes and now to get their booze.  The gravy train we Missourians experience is easily observed by stopping by the Missouri gas stations on the West side of the Clark bridge on highway 67.  The same holds true in every border town up and down the Mississippi, buy your fuel in Missouri and save.  The license tags of the patrons of these facilities proudly state that they are residents of the “Land of Lincoln.”  Keep Missouri green, spend money here.

There is a lesson in all of this.  Government cannot continue to fund every nutty idea without raising taxes.  Missouri survives by minimal funding of education, social services, and road work.  The Post needs to stop educating the citizen’s of Illinois, before it is too late.  Doesn’t the Post realize how this article might kill the goose that continues to lay the golden egg?

One of these days the Washington D. C. rocket scientists will figure out the same jam the Illinois legislature still ponders.  There is no such thing as a free lunch.  Citizens will vote with their feet to avoid high taxation of all sorts.

Note to Congress and the President:  All of us are fed up with the disgusting spending habits of those who are supposed to “represent” us.

Infrastructure upgrades, quality education for children…damn these nutty ideas. Next thing you know, Stewie will be saying the police and fire departments are a luxury and the military is a bottomless pit that eats money.

Very well said Mr. Katz. Take a look at California….BROKE. Liberal politicans in that state have been spending money like drunken sailors for years on every “feel good” liberal idea and look what’s happening. People and companies are leaving in droves to Nevada, Oregon and other states with no or lower taxes.

frank,

–You are right but, guess who is going to end up footing the bill for California’s stupidity? That’s right, you, me and other producers in our society.
–And this is what the Obama wants for the country. Who is going to pay the bill for the country if and when it goes insolvent? Anybody know how to speak Chinese?

Actually, bunkie, as I’ve pointed out before, California has been footing the bill for many other states for years. It has consistently sent more to Washington than it’s gotten back. So, really, the rest of the states, you know, owe California a ton of money.
