Ignoring climate change serves short-term profits, not humanity

When decisions about issues that threaten our lives, livelihoods, or ways of life confront us, “I’d rather be safe than sorry!” often guides us.  This ‘Precautionary Principle’ means we should lean towards the choice that will do the least harm.  Cautious conservatism often seems the most reasonable approach.

Those arguing that we cannot afford to address climate change with aggressive policies and programs should reflect on this principle.  If, driven by business as usual, the ‘worst case scenario’ of climate change occurs, the devastation imposed on our agriculture, forestry and fisheries will likely be catastrophic.  The cost of reducing carbon emissions pales into insignificance by comparison.  Our way of life is threatened and the tipping point induced by inaction may be near.

Recall that resistance to fuel efficiency standards cost Detroit its international markets and contributed to corporate downfall.  Now rebounding Detroit dumped its campaign against energy efficiency and touts green credentials as it turns belatedly to small efficient vehicle production.  Additionally, our continued emphasis on coal and oil at the expense of renewable energy generation has prevented the United States from assuming leadership in an arena where we should be global leaders.

Not addressing climate change may serve short term profits, but neither humanity nor our future.

Alan,

What happened to the ice age we were supposed to be in by now?

Where are the new solar, wind, hydro, nuclear, coal, oil, gas power production facilities Obama could have built instead of bailing out private companies?

China is drilling for oil off the coast of Florida but our moronic legislators refuse to allow US companies to drill.

Detroit has built many fuel efficient models over the years. None have turned a profit. There has never been corporate resistance to fuel efficiency standards. There has been resistance to building cars that no one will buy.

Now that the government has taken control of general motors and back door control of Chrysler it will force these companies to build smaller, lighter, underpowered death traps that no one will buy.

Is climate change happening? Probably. Is is caused by the people in North America? Absolutely not. Heating and cooling of this planet is caused by that big yellow orb in the sky called the sun.

Montana and Wyoming have been tropical jungles, as shown in the fossil record. They have also been covered by glaciers. This is why we adapt.

JemesR,
As far as efficient cars that people buy (Saturn), Do you find it as puzzling as I do that the deal breaker between Penske and Obamamotors appears to be that Penske wanted his new Saturn guaranteed to be valued in US Dollars??? Obamamotors balked and the deal was off. WTF??????? Sounds like a push for global currency to me,,,just sayin!

Hmmm-first it was Global Warming-nobody in their right mind bought it.
Changed the name to Climate Change.

Wonder what they will change the name too, when people in their right mind don’t buy Climate Change?

Hell, Climate Change is a daily occurance in Missouri.

Alan Journet:

“Not addressing climate change may serve short term profits, but neither humanity nor our future.”

Near as I can tell, mothers of liberals were frightened by a purple phylogeny during their gestation period. Loopies don’t believe in creationism and wet themselves when evolution is a reasonable solution to climate change.

The data that “created” the famous AlGore “hockeystick” graph is being exposed more and more to be fraudulent. Some data was cherry picked, other data just ignored.

This brings to mind a news article I read the other day. It said the price of gaz guzzlers had climbed because demand was back up, due to lower gas prices. Now, how many times do we have to go through this? Why do people choose to forget their hard-learned lessons so readily? Humanity didn’t get where it is without long-term planning encouraged by memory of lessons learned.

magnum… I’m sure it was changed to avoid the impression that the average temperature would increase on every part of the globe. Global warming was a confusing term from the start.
