I was heartened by the two letters that appeared in the Sunday edition of your paper regarding police conduct. Both Chief Isom and Ms. Joyce hit a home run with their comments, and it is nice to see that they are just as passionate to stand up for the greatest majority of police officers who go to work every day and do the right thing as they are to rid the profession of those who don’t deserve the right to call themselves police.

The media and community in general, have a tendency to look at the high profile misdeeds of very few individuals and paint all police with the same brush. That is just not so. When an officer becomes a subject of an investigation the public immediately calls for his or her head. Never mind that police officers are citizens and possess the same rights as any other person under investigation.

The Chief has to remain neutral and detached from the process so that he or she can make a reasoned decision when the facts are placed in front of them. Not unlike the process of investigating a crime and placing the facts in front of a neutral court for trial. Chief Isom has a clearly demonstrated that his intention is to do just that and continue to demand the highest standards from the department. The 99% of the members of the department that remain off the front page deserve all of our support and admiration. Do not consider every officer you see to be among the 1%  who chose to fail and meet the high standards of the profession.
