Mallard Fillmore should go
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
Bruce Tinsley, creator of “Mallard Fillmore,” apparently considers himself an expert on what the modern comic strip reader finds amusing. Simply include the words “Obama,” “racist,” or “the president” in your strip and the belly laughs will follow. In the last five weeks of strips, Mr. Tinsley has mentioned the president twelve times and has referred to racism eight times.
Okay, Mr. Tinsley, we get it. The evil liberals, having elected a dark-skinned chief executive, are now obsessed with racism. Except the only one obsessing is you.
I assume the P-D deems it necessary to carry a “conservative” strip to balance the supposedly “liberal” bent of “Doonesbury.” There are at least two fallacies in this thinking. First, there is nothing conservative about what Mr. Tinsley draws. It is heavy-handed, uninspired, and relentless, but it certainly has nothing to do with conservatism. It is also not remotely funny. The other fallacy is that “Doonesbury” is a tool of the liberals. Mike Trudeau’s strips, in addition to being better drawn and far better written, are critical of people across the political spectrum, including liberals. His writing is subtle, thoughtful, and even laugh-producing.
I know that the comics page is on its deathbed (just try and make out the tiny, tiny print in “Pearls Before Swine” sometime) but it should be allowed to die with dignity. Get rid of this hateful, unfunny strip.

Supposedly “liberal tilt” of the PD?? You’ve got to be kidding. It is one of the most liberal papers in the country, even worse than the NY Times.
Look at the editoral page; look at the selection of letters to the editor; read Doonesbury; look at liberal columns like Mink and Maureed Dowd, and then tell me with a straight face that the PD is not liberal. If fact,
Mallard Fillmore is about the ONLY conservative part of the paper. Mallard is “right on”, sorry you can’t stand the truth.
Oh Alan,
Silly silly Alan. Mr. Establishment Alan. The 60s, your formative years, and sense of humor are long past. Remember chanting “Don’t trust anyone over 30?” Well Alan you are over 30 now and if you haven’t noticed you may not be trusted. Your open mind has to closed has it not? Alternatively, are you so terribly concerned that a few column inches of a local paper is being wasted and could go to a better use? Perhaps supporting the raising of taxes and outlawing non-government schools? And then you instance on racism. Tisk, tisk. I am sure that hard working fellow shining your golf shoes and clearing your table at the club may very well disagree on your progressiveness. Oh yes, Ladue, that melting pot of STL.
And yet I must thank you for one of the most absurd letters I have read in quite a while. It gave me quite a chuckle.
One of the few “right on” strips available today.

But it MUST GO because it doesn’t fit into my ideological beliefs!!!
Not very “liberal” of Mr. Freed to want to shut down a cartoon with which he doesn’t agree……
Nanny, Mallard Fillmore is calling my daddy a liberal. Make him stop or I’ll hold my breath till I turn blue…..
Doonesbury is written by Garry Trudeau, not Mike. I really like the part where you say that Doonesbury does not tilt radical left. You’re kidding, right? Mallard strikes at the heart of liberal fallacy and that must really bother you. I appreciate you reminding us how tolerant the left is with your demand that the P-D eliminate the strip. What hypocrisy.
I don’t like it so it needs to be censored!!
A slight peek inside the liberal/Leftist mind: “I know what everyone should read and it’s not Mallard Fillmore. So, remove it from the newspaper!”
They show their a$$ everytime.
Amazed-
Sorry to see you don’t like it …. (or like it…}
