Here’s what 2009 has in store for technology, maybe
Tim Barker

So here we go again, staring another new year square in the face. Just for fun, I thought I’d do a bit of quick research to see what the experts are expecting to happen this year in the way of technology.

The first few predictions here come from the folks at JWT’s fourth annual look at technology trends. The others are from various sources.

  • This could be year that cloud computing makes its push, moving software off your hard drive and onto the Internet - the cloud. It’s an evolution expected to make computing more mobile.
  • The decline of e-mail will continue. We already know that young people prefer texting and social network message systems. JWT thinks e-mail will gradually be eclipsed by more efficient systems.
  • Social networks will become very important to job seekers. With the threat of layoffs and a tight job market facing most of us, social networks with a professional component could see a surge in membership.
  • Seems like everyone already has a camera phone, but InfoTrends/CAP Ventures is projecting even more growth in this sector. So I guess there are lots of people out there without. InfoTrends is projecting that camera phones will soon account for 89 percent of all mobile phones shipped. That’ll be 860 million units this year, up from 178 million just five years ago.
  • Julie Jacobson of CEPro.com says this could finally be the year that sees wireless high definition, with several big name manufacturers, including Belkin and Monster, expected to release new products this year.
  • Lisa Montgomery at ElectronicHouse.com suggests we’ll see a continuation of the trend that has TVs getting ever slimmer.Last year, she says, the benchmark was 4 inches deep. Now the new target is 1 inch.
  • Verizon Business has put together a list of 10 predictions. Among them is one suggesting that companies will think more about the environment when making business decisions. “Corporate social responsibility is becoming increasingly important in how companies are viewed by their employees, customers and investors. What’s good for the environment also happens to make good business sense.”
