Technology betrayed me and my beloved Oklahoma State Cowboys
So there I was last night at a downtown bar with a group of friends and co-workers gathered to wish our friend Sara a fond farewell.
I was only half present. I had my Blackberry propped out on the table, tuned to the ESPN gamecast of the Oklahoma State Cowboys - Oklahoma Sooners basketball game. I wasn’t actually watching the game - just text highlights, updated every 15 seconds.
I’ll admit I was pretty much pretending to take part in conversations in between the 15 second updates. What can I say? I love OSU and despise OU. A person must have priorities.
So anyway, the game came down to the final seconds. My Cowboys were trailing by one but had the ball in what promised to be the game’s final possession. I knew we were going to lose because I’m a pessimist.
Of course, my pessimism was rewarded when the next update said guard Byron Eaton had missed his final shot and the game was over. Final score: OU 70, OSU 69.
Great. I turned off the phone. I sulked around for a bit. Then I went home and sulked around there for a while.
Finally, I could take it no longer. I went to my computer to check out the ESPN recap. I needed to know what went wrong.
Nothing, it turned out. If I’d only stuck with my Blackberry a little longer, I would have learned about the OU foul with 2.3 seconds on the clock. I would have learned about the free throws that put my Cowboys on top, 71 to 70. I would have learned that there is justice in the world.
So….maybe I should watch tonight’s OSU-Mizzou game on my Blackberry.
