Google may be adding micro-blog search for Twitter, etc.
If you’ve ever had this burning desire to know what everyone’s talking about, Google may have soon be able to help you scratch that itch.
Ars Technica has a story suggesting Google is about to introduce a new search featureĀ that will sift through those stream-of-consciousness type posts found on micro-blogging sites like Twitter, whose own search functions are on the more primitive side.
Google’s system, on the other hand, would work more like its current Blog Search, sorting results by relevance using its constantly evolving algorithms. If a particular string of search terms has relevance to keywords in tweets or other micro-blogging messages, then Google will show them along with other results under the heading “Recent updates about….” How Google will determine that relevance from such small blurbs of text is of course part of its secret sauce, though it would likely involve tracking frequency of keywords and keyword combinations over time. It could also take into account things like numbers of followers, re-tweets or reposts, or other factors.
No word on when this new feature might make its debut. But in theory, at least, it should be a nice tool to see what the world - or at least the world of micro-bloggers - is talking about.
