I guess Google got bored simply organizing the world’s information on the Internet. Now the mammoth search engine is using its resources (as in all those search terms you type in) to track influenza outbreaks.

Google Flu Trends is keeping track of user searches related to the flu. If you type in something like “flu symptoms”, then Missouri or Illinois (or wherever you live) gets credit for possible flu outbreak. Based on the number of people making similar searches, each state is assigned a rating.

Tests of the new Web tool from Google.org, the company’s philanthropic unit, suggest that it may be able to detect regional outbreaks of the flu a week to 10 days before they are reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

According to this measure, there are six states in the U.S. right now with moderate flu activity - Hawaii, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky, Delaware and Maine.Meanwhile, Texas and Nevada seem the be the healthiest.
