FCC rolls out new Web site for digital TV transition
With a little more than a month to go before the digital television transition takes place on June 12, the Federal Communications Commission has unveiled a new Web site that’s supposed to do a better job helping consumers get ready.
Looking at the latest numbers from Nielsen, we still have a ways to go before everyone is ready for the big switch. Earlier this month, the firm said 3.4 percent - or 3.8 million - of U.S. households are completely unready for the transition. Another 9.5 percent are only partially ready - those are the people who still have at least one TV in the house that’s not hooked up to cable, satellite, etc.
Clearly, the FCC Web site is but one piece of the puzzle when it comes to getting the word out on the switch. But you do have to wonder how much good it really does.
I’m working on a transition story for which I interviewed Shannon Dunham, an attorney with Sherman & Howard, and a former Charter vice president. She brought up an interesting point about the value of using the Internet to reach the last holdouts:
“The ones who need it the most are the ones that aren’t going to be on the Internet.”
