Facebook agrees to stricter safeguards to protect children
With so much attention focused lately on protecting kids on social networking sites, it’s no surprise that Facebook agreed today to institute new rules and restrictions aimed at keeping kids safe from predators.
The agreement followed negotiations with the attorneys general of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Social networking giant MySpace took similar steps earlier this year.
According to the Illinois Attorney General, the agreement says Facebook will:
Provide automatic safety messages when a child is in danger of giving personal information to an unknown adult.
Restrict the ability of users to change their listed ages.
Act more aggressively to remove inappropriate content and groups from the site.
Require third party vendors to adhere to Facebookâs safety and privacy guidelines.
