Legace going on IR; Schwarz recalled from Peoria
Manny Legace’s right knee felt somewhat better Wednesday, but he’s not 100 percent, so the Blues have played him on injured reserve.
Legace tweaked his knee in pregame warmups Tuesday night in Calgary when he and a teammate collided in the corner of the rink. Legace had surgery on the same knee last spring, missing the final 21 games of the season.
IR is a minimum of seven days, but in Legace’s situation, it’s retroactive to last Tuesday’s game, meaning he would be eligible to play Tuesday at home against Edmonton.
In the meantime, Marek Schwarz is on his way to Edmonton from Peoria to back up Hannu Toivonen Friday.
âWe just decided that it’s not 100 percent, so why even take chance?” Blues President John Davidson said. “So you have two options: Put him on 48-hour emergency IR . . . you can call up a goalie for 48 hours and have Manny ready for Sunday. But you only get one of those per year. So hypothetically if Manny gets the flu later in the season, you’ve already burned that. We made the decision (to put Legace on IR) because it’s only two games before he comes off. It’s possible for him to play Tuesday.
“He felt pretty good today, but not perfect. If you put him (as the backup Friday), what happens if he has to play? Then his tweak becomes a major problem. Then we aren’t being responsible. We’re just trying to be responsible and cautionary. We have to have a backup. If he had to go in (Friday), we could possibly have a problem.”
