Toivonen back from Peoria, brings Glumac with him
The Blues had good intentions Monday when they sent backup Hannu Toivonen to Peoria from some extra work.
The only problem is that the plan backfired on them. Manny Legace’s arm injury in Wednesday’s game in Chicago put Marek Schwarz in the spotlight and he showed that he’s still not ready. He gave up five goals on 13 shots in the 6-1 loss to the Blackhawks.
So on Friday, Toivonen will be back with the Blues after playing two games with Peoria. Schwarz has been re-assigned to the Rivermen and will join the team in Manitoba.
Toivonen won both of his games with the Rivermen, helping the Blues’ AHL affiliate extend its winning streak to eight games with a 4-2 win over Manitoba Thursday.
In three games in Peoria this season, Toivonen is 3-0 with a 1.95 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage.
“Our guys are playing incredibly hard,” Toivonen told reporters after the game. “They really look good. For me, it’s nice to come down here and be able to play back-to-back games and get in there and get comfortable.”
Peoria coach Dave Baseggio said: “Toivonen made some big saves in the third period, and that’s what good goaltenders do.”
The Blues made their first forward call-up of the season Friday when they told Mike Glumac to bring his gear to St. Louis.
The team hasn’t forgotten Glumac’s productive training camp. He’s been in their minds all season, but with the emergence of rookie David Perron and the signing of Mike Johnson, the club hasn’t needed him.
Now with Johnson (shoulder) out for the season and Martin Rucinsky (shoulder) still on the shelf, the Blues have just 12 healthy forwards. They are headed on the road Monday for a three-game trip and want to have an extra body with them. We’ll have to wait and see whether Glumac cracks the lineup on this trip.
Here are Glumac’s stats at Peoria this season:
Games: 41
Goals: 13 (7 on the power play)
Assists: 19
Points: 32
Plus-minus: Even
Penalty minutes: 63
I’ll have more on these two moves in tomorrow’s Post-Dispatch.
