Postgame quotes from Vancouver
Depending on which edition of the Post-Dispatch you received, you might not have had the final score or any postgame comments from the Blues’ locker room after Wednesday’s late game in Vancouver.
Well, the “Morning Skate” blog is our avenue for that situation.
I’m sure you’ve seen by now that the Blues fell 3-2 in a shootout to the Canucks, with Daniel Sedin scoring the lone goal of the shootout. The Blues are 0-4-2 in their last six games and play in San Jose tonight at 9:30. Because of the back-to-back games, there won’t be a morning skate today in San Jose, so hopefully these quotes will give you a fix.
The questions after the game came from a pool of reporters.
Q: The shootout hasn’t been good to you this season. (The Blues are 1-4 in shootouts so far).
Andy Murray: “We’ve got good shootout shooters, we’ve got a quality goaltender. We practice it everyday . . . maybe we should stop practicing it. We had a chance to score, but we failed to score. We had a chance to win it. One of our players (David Perron) hit the goal post there with the last shot.”
Q: How frustrating is this . . . six losses in a row?
Andy Murray: “Don’t talk about six in a row. Our kids . . . we just worked our tail off. Don’t give me that question. You don’t insult guys that have worked their tail off. We’re not concerned about five or six in a row. We’re concerned about playing hard every night and doing what we can to get wins.”
Q: Coach, it seemed that your guys played a much better team game than we’ve seen in the last five or six games?
Andy Murray: “I thought our structure was good tonight. Obviously Vancouver plays a real solid structure game too. We got a big power-play goal (from Brad Boyes) and then we needed one at the end of the game. We had a short 5-on-3 . . . (Keith) Tkachuk had a great chance alone out in the slot. We didn’t score. But I liked our structure tonight a lot better than what it has been. Certainly, both goaltenders were outstanding in the game tonight.”
Q: Do you feel good about the way Manny Legace bounced back?
Andy Murray: “Yeah. I wish we’d given him one more goal so he could have got a win tonight. But I thought he played hard.”
Q: What did you think of the officials’ call that the whistle had blown dead on the goal by Keith Tkachuk with 2:48 left in regulation?
Andy Murray: “He felt there was contact with the goalie, so he thought (Roberto) Luongo had it. Then he caught it and afterwards he got knocked into the goal and that’s when it went in. But the puck never stopped.”
*********
Q: What was your take on the disallowed goal by Tkachuk?
Manny Legace: “Same thing in Nashville the other night, where the puck was in the net and the ref blew the whistle and he thought it was in the goalie’s glove. He said, ‘No goal.’ The puck was in the back of the net. I don’t care if you blow the whistle or not, it’s still in the back of the net. If the ref’s not sure, take it out of his hands so we can go upstairs. Just take it out of his hands. Let it go to Toronto and let them rule. Then we’re OK with it. But when he doesn’t go upstairs. That’s just the way it happens sometimes. If it wasn’t for Roberto (Luongo), we would have won in the third period. He made some unbelievable saves down the stretch there.”
Q: Do you believe that was a better effort overall tonight for the Blues?
Manny Legace: “Ah, the last two games it was my fault. It was nobody else’s on our team. I just played terrible. But a solid 60 minutes tonight (for the team) . . . we didn’t get our goal that counted.”
******
Q: What did you think about your goal that was disallowed?
Keith Tkachuk: “It’s just one of those things. There’s nothing you can do. I can’t stop, especially because I got tripped by (Aaron) Miller. After I beat him, I get a shot off . . . I wish I could (stop). But I just don’t think the goalie had possession for it to be a quick whistle. But there’s nothing we can do. Two games in a row something like that’s happened . . . unfortunately we didn’t get the call.”
Q: Do you think it went in before the ref blew the whistle?
Keith Tkachuk: “Well, (Luongo) didn’t have possession of it. I wish I can stop in mid-air right after I got tripped, but there’s nothing you can do.”
