Blues players lament trade of Salvador
I know a lot of you are scratching your heads about the trade of Bryce Salvador to New Jersey for feisty forward - and St. Louisan - Cam Janssen. I’m going to hold off judgement until this afternoon when we talk to JD and find out the details of the Blues’ efforts to re-sign Salvador and what was available on the trade market.
In the meantime, Salvador is going to a playoff contender and the Blues are getting a player who really wants to be here. I’ve been told that Janssen was stoked when he heard the news that he was coming home to St. Louis. He is regarded as the first St. Louisan to make it to the NHL (not counting Pat LaFontaine, who left when he was 5).
Here’s what Blues players had to say this morning about the trade:
Eric Brewer
On the trade:
“It’s a real tough loss . . . huge loss. We’ve played together for two years and got along on and off the ice. Just a real great guy, great teammate, great family guy. We lost a good family today.”
On being reminded that the NHL is a business:
“It’s part of it. Most of us have been traded at some point. You have to deal with it and just kind of know that that’s the existence we’re in. Just kind of carry on and we’ve got games to win.”
On Cam Janssen:
“I don’t really know much about him to be honest with you. I know he’s a real physical up-and-down winger.”
On missing Salvador:
“He’s been here for a long time. He’s done a lot of good things for the team. He’s done a lot of good things off the ice here as well. I really enjoyed the three years that we played together and the two years as partners.”

On losing Salvador:
“It’s one of those things that you knew they were going to make a move with someone. Unfortunately, it was the classiest person I’ve ever played with . . . Bryce Salvador. He’s a guy that you never had to worry about. He’s going to put it on the line every time he steps on the ice. I think Jersey is getting a solid player and a solid person. I played with him for a long time now and you won’t find a nicer person than Bryce Salvador. I think he’ll fit well with the NJ organization. They’re going to be very pleased with the guy they’re getting.”
On Cam Janssen:
“I don’t know much about him, but I know he’s the type of guy that leaves it on the ice every single time he steps on it. He’ll stick up for his teammates. He’s built a good reputation in the National Hockey League. He’ll do whatever it takes to stay in the lineup.”
On moving forward:
“We traded Bryce, but we know what we have to do. We have to go out and try to win a hockey game tonight and get back into it.”

On hearing about the trade of his close friend, Salvador:
“I think you’re just shocked originally. Disappointed that they couldn’t get something done, but I certainly understand the business. I’m happy for him. He’s going to a great team. He’s going to get opportunities. It’s all positive for him.”
On what the two talked about:
“I told him I’ll be text-messaging and keeping in touch. Just asked him if April needed anything to let me know. He’ll be on a plane this afternoon. That’s how it works.”
On being happy that Salvador is going to a playoff team:
“Yeah, I mean, glad he’s going to the East so I don’t have to play against him. I’m happy for him.”

On Cam Janssen:
“He’s a local boy, so when I come down here early in August, I see him at the rink. I played against him in the Memorial Cup a few years ago. That’s about it. I talked to him a few times. Obviously I know what style of player he is. He’s the same style player as me. Just gets in the forecheck and bangs around. He’s a tough guy too.”
On fighting Janssen in the past:
“I think I’ve fought him four times in my career so far. He’s always up for a good battle, that’s for sure.”
On how he fared against Janssen:
“Pretty well I guess. They’re all good battles. I’m not going to say I beat him up, but they were good fights. He’s one tough customer.”
On King and Janssen possibly being in the lineup together:
“We’ll have to wait and see what happens. I’m not sure if he’s healthy right now. We both can’t change our games. I’m sure it’s going to be the same thing out there. Just go around and bang and bang. We’re both the same style player, so I’m sure (like with) Chase and Twist . . . it’s going to be the same thing.”
On his thoughts about having two enforcers:
“I think it’s going to probably bring a lot more out of both of us because we’re both going to be competing for a spot in the lineup every night. We’ve both got the same role pretty much and they’re probably only going to put one of us in there. It’s going to create competition between both of us and we’re going to work that much harder. It’s not that I was comfortable already, but just knowing that fact – there’s two of us here – we’ve got to work that much harder.”

Would have loved to keep Bryce, but business is business, I guess. Do you know if Cam has any offensive upside? Has he ever shown any signs of being something more than an enforcer?
On another note, will Richards be in the lineup tonight for Dallas?
Thanks for the quotes JR. I really am shocked that there weren’t any better offers for Salvador. I don’t know anything about Jansen other than what I have read today, but are we really filling a need with this trade? Are we getting enough in return for a pending UFA to make it worth shipping him off? I will suspend judgment as well, but not for long. There really needs to be some more information or a better explanation for how this went down because my initial reaction is we got the short end of this deal for sure.

I realize the Cardinals are the #1 team in St. Louis and all, but the top 8 stories are all about the Cards with 4 of them about steroids. COME ON!!! It is the Hockey trade deadline and the Blues are making moves. Nice coverage PD. Get a clue. WE ARE SICK OF THE STEROIDS CRAP! Give JR some credit and put his Blues coverage on top for once. The Cards articles will still be there, steroids and all.
Are you telling Me that in the entire NHL,there was not ONE offensive prospect available for a top 6 defensemen with NHL experience?I think JD has done a great job,but on this one He has lost his mind .This trade makes NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.We already have DJ King.Are you telling Me we need more depth at CementHead than we do Offense? Wade Belak gets a 5th rounder and Adam Foote gets a 1st rounder. I figure Salvador could have gotten us a 3rd rounder at least looking at those deals. That would be a lot better than Janssen. I thought the compensation to the Devils for the Scott Stevens trade was over. Apparently not…..
While JD has done a great job I have to question this trade. We need goals, not more penalty mintues. We have seen Cam play in St. Louis and while he might be very good at his role, its not going to help this team score goals. I dont understand why Jackman was not traded after signing him for a top offensive player when we have some many good defensement on the Blues and in the minors and yet struggle to score goals.
The more and more I think about this trade the worse it looks. I am struggling to find any positive coming out of this trade at all. I hope JD, LP and the organIzation are ready for the back lash this is going to create from the fans, because I have yet to read one single favorable comment about this one. Not good at all.

Jeremy, unless JD pulls another trade off (get rid of Mayers please), you should advise him to stay far, far away from the Thursday chats. It will not be pretty.
Other than the hometown connection I don’t get this trade. DJ King fills his role nicely, and other needs are more prominent. How about more offense? Perhaps Davidson is trying to pattern the Blues after Anaheim.

Backman has just been traded to NY Rangers for a 4th round draft pick!!! FINALLY!!! Now that makes sense!
I have no problem with Janssen as a player but I don’t see how this fits for the Blues at this point in time.
JD said he brings a lot of grit and toughness to the Blues. That’s all well and good, but we have plenty of guys who bring grit but no offense. See: DJ King, Dan Hinote, Ryan Johnson and Jamal Mayers.
This is an absolutely terrible move. I would have rather had another fourth round pick.
He was our 4th or 5th best defenseman on a team that is currently 12th in the standings. Let’s not criticize for making a minor move. JD knows what he is doing!!
I have to echo the other comments on this board—this trade just makes NO sense–its like they just wanted to make a trade to say they had—more penalty minutes, no more goals, less defense, possibly still injured so might be a goon without the goods—-worst trade i’ve seen in a long while here!!!
I am sorry to see Salvador go. I have really liked the moves up to the ones today. Resigning Jackman and letting Salvador go? Not good moves, Barret is a goon, I can’t count the number of times he has turned the puck over in our zone, or hung his partner out to dry with a bad pass. Then you resign him to good money and say you can’t sign Salvador. Now you have traded Backman for a 4th rounder, what getting a used puckbag for Salvador wasn’t enough, now you take a late round draft pick in a down draft year for a top 4 defenseman. That is 2 top 4 defenseman gone from a team. Great choice. I guess that we can pray that the draft picks really pan out as we are gettin rid of good quality, defenseman at such a strong pace, that scoring 1 goal a game while giving up 2 just wasn’t acceptable, instead, we are going to give up 4 goals a game with rookies or even worse, Matt Walker in the lineup. Defense has been a strong point this year, I understand that we have depth, WE NEED SCORING. 2 goals in 3 games, thanks for downgrading when you had assets to upgrade……
The way most of you are talking it appears that JD and LP will be in the bread line soon…so, you can take all your expertise and apply for the job…I am sure you will make all the right moves, all the time…geez…

I have to disagree with you on the Backman comment. #4 defenseman? 3rd line defenseman on any team. Not happy with a 4th but he needed to go and I don’t think you could have gotten much more than that from anyone.
I would have rather seen JD sign Salvadore to 2 years/5 mil and see whether we could have gotten a power forward who can score for Jackman. We need more bodies in front of the net.
im sorry, but i think having the additional energy guy will help. You look at the disparity between home and away and the team has no energy on the road. You get a legitimate energy line to fire up the other three, we may be able to score more than 1 goal per game away from scottrade. You look at the three ’scoring’ lines and on paper, they should be scoring. There is plenty of talent, and at home they seem to find the net alot more often than home, maybe its the fans, maybe its attitude, but if they want any chance of playing through april, they need to step up the away game, and maybe another enforcer will get the job done. Plus look how excited he seems to be to play for the blues, this kids work ethic should inspire the rest of em to take their game up a notch.
To Dan, won’t is it about Mayers that you and other don’t like? He is a hard working player who makes fair money for a vetern of his caliber: Great PK guy, leader on AND off the ice and willing to stick up for his teamates.
But back to the trades. As I have posted several other places I am not happy with the Salvador for Janssen trade at all. Yea, he may be a local product, but who cares really? We have enough ‘enforcer/gritt’ guys with Mayers, Hinote and King. We didn’t need a fourth.
if we would have got at least a 4th or even a 5th rounder for Salvador and Janssen, then it would be so bad, but come on. This is one of the worst trades in recent Blues history, imho.
This was destined when they resigned Jackman. I thought it was a bad move yesterday when they did it. I know he’s younger, but Jackman can’t carry Salvador’s skates in the defensive end. I’m surprised they were able to get
I’ll have to agree with Ken. We were not burning it up here and there’s plenty of depth on the d-line. With the glut of defensemen on the trade market, Salvador’s value probably wasn’t as good as some here would like. Getting an explosive banger with charisma makes sense in that it brings home a hometown guy and it gives a jolt to this team which has looked lackluster of late.

Maybe the Blues players were in shock tonight after losing longtime teammate Salvador. They looked disjointed through most of the game, losing many individual battles for pucks. The Blues should have been up at least 3 goals going into the third period, with Kariya and Stempniak missing golden opportunities. Without forwards who can score, instead of putting harmless shots into the goalie, this team is going nowhere. Trading Salvador for Jannsen makes some sense given Sallie’s UFA status, but the Blues need to start scoring goals. A grand total of 3 goals in 4 pivotal games is not the way to make the playoffs.
I was at last nights game, and lets give it up for the new 14.4 Million dollar man, he was completely out of position on 1 goal, gave the puck away several times. Oh, but he did run into poeple a couple of times…… I stand by the belief that Jackmann should have gone and Salvador stayed. Backmann did not play well and could use the change. So, with that being said, I hope that they call up the new kids soon and get them playing, because Walker was -2 last night and was completely out of position on one of them. He was slow, couldn’t make a decision, and he is a strength. I say let him walk at the end of the year and bring the new kids up. I can deal with losing with rookies, I can’t stand it when we over pay for mediocre talent. (Jackman, Mckee).

If you all can not look at the Blues organization as a whole since the day the new regime took over and recognize that they have a plan and continue to execute on that plan, then you are foolish. We are far better off as an organization today than we were last year and I’m sure that the trend will continue.
This management team has one thing that no other sports team in this town as and that is passion. When you listen to JD talk about the moves, there is no doubt that he believes these deals needed to be done and they will benefit the team on a long term basis. No offense, but JD has a little more knowledge of hockey than the rest of you so I’ll take his word for it over the rest of you bloggers. Be thankful for a management team that actually cares about the fans and the product that they are providing. You dont get that anywhere else.
P.S. It’s nice to see a topic other than steroids/HGH being discussed.
For Brad, #18. Have you actually zeroed in on Mayers and watched him play? He makes horrible decisions with the puck. He can’t stick handle and can’t pass. Every two on one he ever has he will always wind up and take a slap shot right into the middle of the goalie’s chest (aka the Gino Cavalleni special) instead of passing it to a wide open teammate or trying to make a move of any sort. Then again, he can’t pass, so maybe a shot is better for him there. Or my other favorite play of his is gaining the red line and dumping it in, instead of trying to make a play to gain the zone with control of the puck. Just watch him over the next few games and you’ll see for what we are paying this guy, he doesn’t bring much. And if he was such a leader, why wasn’t he named as an assistant captain of the team?
Now watch next game he’ll score a hat trick. I know, maybe he should try the tiger stripes in his eyebrows again! What a joke that was…
As many of the other fans have expressed, I’m also frustrated by the lack of value the Blues received in return for their players at the trade deadline. But most of all, I’m baffled at the philosophy that just because a player grew up in St. Louis, that we need him on our team. After drafting local product Ben Bishop, they’ve brought in Yan Stastny and now Cam Janssen. To me, this is not a viable strategy for player selection, especially considering the fact that the Blues passed on drafting the one St. Louis guy with star potential - Paul Stastny! Unfortunately, I think both Yan Stastny and Janssen aren’t NHL-calibre players and will probably be back in the AHL shortly. Bishop has some upside, but NHL shooters can really exploit a big goalie’s lack of agility going post-to-post, just ask Hannu Toivonen.
Agree with you Larry especially on passing over Paul Stasny. The Blues drafted Scott Jackson instead and if you say “Who?” I answer with exactly.
One point I disagree is with big goalies. See Roberto Luongo. Also, Ben doesn’t need to go post to post. When he is in the butterfly, his legs reach from post to post.
I know who Scott Jackson is, he’s the guy that they failed to sign for one reason or another and is heading back into the draft….. great choice. At least sign the moron and trade him. Geez…..
I just read the article on why the Blues Signed Jackmann and let Salvador go. Even though, as the article says, that Sal outplayed Jackmann, wanted less money, did more in the community, had less trade value etc. etc. It came down to AGE, is this management so wrapped up in the age factor that they will send an aging player to another team keeping someone less talented but younger? I understand rebuilding, but talent is what you build around not age. Jackmann has had serious trouble since the “new NHL” came into being, he used to just clutch and grab as much as anyone else only he didn’t know how to play positional hockey until recently and still forgets when there is a chance for a big hit. I understand most of the moves, even sitting Perron, but do me a favor and don’t write off this year and expect me to still come to the games. I still don’t believe the whole Calder Trophy for Jackmann. Had he not played next to Big Al he wouldn’t have even been in the top 5 that year. Big Al made him look better than he is….. Now, I say, this off season, quicly trade Jackmann for a dependable defenseman and quit trying to make the entire team enforcers…….
I am a HUGE Devils fan and recd this from a Rangers fan, go figure. anyway, i do not know much about Salvador. i checked out his stats he does not appear to be strong offensively but definitley solid on defense. We are a very defense oriented team and i feel Salvador will fit nicely into that mix. we are also really starting produce offensively as well this coming from a surge in ur defense. i think it was a couple of weeks ago when we beat Carolina 6-1 and i think 4 of the goals were scored exclusively be defensemen. so i think Salvador will bring that aggression and may have an opportunity to increase his offensive productivity as well.
I will miss Cam though, he really is a fiesty little bastard. i wished they would have brought him into the playoffs last year to kick Ottawa around for awhile. he is a tough guy and an enforcer which is fun for awhile but we have become a definite Cup contender and i think we need more productive elements down the stretch which i will gave Salvador over Janssen.
