St. Louis Blues legend Brett Hull headed for Hall of Fame today
Brett Hull has probably already received the phone call that will lead to his enshrinement in the Hockey Hall of Fame in November. But the official announcement won’t come until this afternoon.
Some readers have emailed me asking the question, “When Hull does enter the Hall of Fame, will he have to choose ONE team for his plaque in Toronto?” The answer is “No.”
Only MLB has a Hall of Fame in which players select a single team affiliation, which is sometimes depicted on the cap of their bust. The NFL mentions each one of the player’s team affiliations.
During a 20-year career, Hull played with Calgary, St. Louis, Dallas, Detroit and Phoenix. The majority of his career, and where he made his mark in the NHL, was in St. Louis, but Hull won Stanley Cups in both Dallas and Detroit.
Hull told the Post-Dispatch yesterday that he’s glad he doesn’t have to choose one team to be represented upon his entry to the Hall of Fame.
“For a guy like (Detroit’s) Steve Yzerman, it would be easy,” Hull said. “I loved everywhere I played. I loved the fans . . . my teammates. To have to pick that, and maybe alienate someone, it’s like a parent picking their favorite kid. I’m very happy that doesn’t happen (with the Hockey Hall of Fame).”
Here are Hull’s regular-season totals for each of his five NHL teams . . .
Calgary: 57 games, 27 goals, 24 assists
BLUES: 744 games, 527 goals, 409 assists
Dallas: 218 games, 95 goals, 101 assists (Stanley Cup)
Detroit: 245 games, 92 goals, 115 assists (Stanley Cup)
Phoenix: 5 games, 0 goals, 1 assist
