On why he picked St. Louis: “There’s a lot of things. It’s an exciting team . . . a younger team with some older experienced guys. It’s a team that at the end of the year, if there was a better team in the NHL, I’m not sure who it was.”
On the Blues’ success being a good advertisement for free agents: “It was hard to miss. I know the playoffs, the first round, didn’t go like they hoped it would, but they were a tough team to play . . . a physical team, they’ve got scorin, and Mason was playing really well at the end.”

On who he knows on the Blues’ roster: “I’ve played with (Eric) Brewer and (Brad) Winchester in Edmonton and (Keith) Tkachuk with USA hockey. I know (Mike) Weaver a little bit.”On playing in the last two Stanley Cup finals (with Pitt and then Det): “It’s been great. It’s always exciting to play that time of the year . . . late May, early June. Both years I’ve been on the wrong side, but it’s been exciting.”

On being a backup: “I think I have the ablity to be a starting goalie in league, but I know what my role is. I’m not 22, 23 anymore. I understand the role they’ve got me in. I don’t really look at it as playing a certain number of games, but what kind of quality game do I play when I do play.

“I’ve always had a pretty healthy dose of confidence in my game. I’ve been through ups and downs. In Edmonton, I thought I played pretty well when I played a consistent amount. Pittsburgh was my best chance and I played pretty well. I’ve always felt that I had the ability.”

On what playing last season in Detroit did for him: “It was a fantastic year. It’s a class-act organization. I know St. Louis doesn’t want to hear that because it’s a huge rivalry, but the’re a classy organization with a lot of real character guys. The experience was second to none in the league. It was really a fun year.”
On his performance with the Red Wings: “I thought I had a pretty strong year. There were times when I was playing lots of games. At the beginning and the end I didn’ play much, so of my 40 games or so, a lot of games were stuffed inside a 65-game stretch. I felt like I had a pretty good season.”

On playing with six teams in five years: “Lots of teams want me. Either that or everybody gets sick of me. I think I had good years in all of those places. I don’t think it’s bad to see different places . . . how people operate in different places. I’ve certainly learned how to make new friends and blend in a new locker room. My wife and I are both looking forward to it.”

“At the end of the year, if there was a better team in the NHL, I’m not sure who it was.” Oh, I don’t know, maybe Vancouver?
