Blues defenseman Eric Brewer undergoes minor knee surgery

As it turns out, there was news developing behind the scenes with Blues defenseman Eric Brewer, although not as serious as was being rumored.

Brewer underwent arthroscopic knee surgery tonight in Vancouver, the team has confirmed.

Brewer injured his right knee while rehabbing from his second back surgery, which was in April. The surgery is expected to delay Brewer’s back rehab a few weeks, adding further uncertainty about when he’ll be able to start the 2009-10 season.

“Eric called us, said he had a tweak in his knee and we said, ‘Go get it looked at,’” Blues President John Davidson said Thursday night. “It’s a setback of a few days, but that’s the way it goes.”

On Wednesday, Brewer told the Post-Dispatch that he was continuing to progress nicely, mentioning that he had skated recently in Vancouver. But Brewer made no mention Wednesday of his recent setback.

Brewer, who has two more years left on his contract, is not expected to miss the entire 2009-10 season, as had been speculated earlier this week. But if there was any hope of him being ready by the season opener Oct. 2 (and there wasn’t much), that has been forgotten now.
That means the Blues will go into training camp, which begins Sept. 12, with five defensemen sure to make the roster: Erik Johnson, Barret Jackman, Roman Polak, Mike Weaver and Carlo Colaiacovo.
The remaining spot (or two spots likely) will be contested between Tyson Strachan, Steve WagnerJonas Junland, newcomer Brendan Bell and prospect Alex Pietrangelo.

Pietrangelo, the No. 4 overall pick in 2008, played eight games with the Blues last season before being returned to his junior hockey team. Pietrangelo still has one more year of junior eligibility remaining, meaning the same rules apply this season. He can play up to nine games in the NHL before the Blues must decide to keep him and have it count as a full season toward holding his rights, or return him to junior hockey.

Petro better be clearly ahead of Strachan, Junland, and Bell to keep, cant miss prospects have never been ruined by being called up to late, however to early possbily. Strachan’s play last year suggests he deserves a legit shot, Junland appears to have upside as well, and Bell has NHL experince for a team with little at the backline.

Surprise, surprise…Brewer isn’t ready. Can they just put him on long-term IR and get some cap relief? Just think how good this team would be if Pleau didn’t give away Pronger for nothing.

Strachan or Petro are my early favorites. I’d like to see Junland step up though.

Ok enough is enough……

First Andy Murray needs to take the “C” away from Captain Injury and give it to a guy that deserves it….Say Backes or McDonald…….

Second we need to just cut our losses and dump this injury-prone waste of human flesh. Right now this guy is so worhtless we couldnt get a bucket of pucks for him. As Lando Calrissian said in TESB “This deal is getting worse all the time!”…..Edmonton should thank us for accepting the crap they gave us fro Pronger….Not that I wish we had him back….I think we could have gotten a better deal for him that what we got……

Maybe if were lucky the guy will just retire and save us the trouble of having to watch him ever play for our beloved ‘Note again……

Just hopeful thinking…….

Kevin M., You’re such an idiot!!! It wasn’t Pleau’s idea to trade Pronger for Brewer. He was just following orders from Laurie. Do you really think that Larry WANTED to make that trade???

Why do people like you continue to live in the past? get over it will ya!!!!

Same goes for you dablues7!!!!

The Blues are going to be fine with or without Brewer, Pronger, or any other defensemen you think they woulda/coulda/shoulda have.

J.D. is doing an excellent job of putting this organization back on the map. Now why can’t you all just see that, appreciate it, and just be thankful????

Lots of morons posting here. Probably the same folks that complained when we got Pronger for Shanahan. Brewer was a pretty good return under the circumstances. Pleau was forced to deal from a weak position and still got a respectable top 4 defenseman. Brewer is not Pronger and never will be. He does make this team better and he’ll be missed, but this is a good opportunity for a young guy to step in.

Petro needs to go back to junior. His defence coach there will be Randy Ladouceur, a proven captain and defence coach in Carolina during their Stanley Cup year. He can also play in the world juniors in Canada and will probably be a top 4 defenceman next year.
