Wagner, Shattock score to open Wendy Pleau Determination Cup

Fans were treated to the first scrimmage of Blues’ training camp Sunday at Scottrade Center. The teams in this year’s tournament are named after the Blues’ assistant coaches and on Sunday, Team (Rick) Wamsley tied Team (Ray) Bennett 1-1.

Forward Tyler Shattock, a fourth-round pick in last June’s draft, scored a power-play goal for Team Wamsley and defenseman Steve Wagner netted the equalizer for Team Bennett.

Wagner’s goal was a heads-up play after a behind-the-back centering dish from David Backes. Wagner called for Backes to center the puck, but not sensing Backes would be able to, he began to leave the front of the net and curve toward the corner.

“I only gave him one yell . . . late . . . I was a split-second from turning away,” Wagner said. “He just fired and I was like ‘Ohhhhhh’ . . . right on my tape.”

There was some pushing and shoving that was a bit surprising because of who it involved. Brad Winchester stirred it up with Backes, and after they separated, Keith Tkachuk gave Backes a bump.

B.J. Crombeen did not participate in the scrimmage, after leaving the practice session earlier in the day with an undisclosed injury. Crombeen said afterwards that the injury was minor and he hoped to be back on the ice Monday.

A lot of players looked impressive Sunday, but none more than Erik Johnson. Johnson carried the puck into the offseason zone with ease and was solid in the defensive zone.

“It felt great,” Johnson said. “I thought I moved the puck well, skated well. It was a really good first day. It’s just something to build upon. Just keeping adding steps to it.”

Team Wamsley will take on Team (Brad) Shaw at 11:30 Monday at Scottrade Center.

Kariya, who sat out of Saturday’s practice with what John Davidson called tightness, was on the ice today. Kariya’s team was not scheduled to scrimmage Sunday.

“It’s kind of nice to have him out there,” Blues coach Andy Murray said. “Paul is a real professional and he’s in tune with his body and what it needs. When he is saying he’s feeling great, like he is right now, it’s great. But there may be times when we rest him, just like we’ll do with (Keith Tkachuk).”

Other injury updates:

- Defenseman Darryl Sydor (quad) did practice.

- Goalie Hannu Toivonen (leg cut) was at the rink Sunday, but did not practice.

Backup goaltender Ty Conklin had a new mask Sunday. The Detroit Red Wings’ mask that he had been wearing during informal practices is gone.

Here we go again . . .

Two years after Murray ordered the equipment staff to paint David Perron’s white skates black, ensuring that Perron wouldn’t draw attention to himself, another player has showed up to camp with white skates.

Forward Mitch Love, who the Blues signed to an AHL contract this summer, was the culprit. Love, though, did not feel Murray’s wrath.

“I didn’t know he had white skates until he got out there,” Murray said. ”I think what he’s waiting for is somebody to make fun of his white skates.”

You see, Love is an enforcer. He had 214 penalty minutes with the Houston Aeros last season.

The Blues are wearing T-shirts this season that read “Plus Player” on the back. It’s a reference to Murray’s theme in camp that he wants the team be better on 5-on-5 play.

Asked about the idea for the shirts, Murray said: “You do everything with a purpose. The area we want to improve the most . . . having more plus players. That’s what the message was.”
