NHL will review questionable hip check in Saturday’s loss to Dallas

For the second time this week, the NHL will be reviewing a questionable hip check when Colin Campbell, the league’s executive vice-president and director of hockey operations, meets with Dallas’ Steve Ott today.

On Monday, Campbell fined Los Angeles’ Rob Scuderi for a hip check on Columbus’ Jason Chimera over the weekend. I’ll get into that in a bit, but first let’s take another look at Ott’s hipcheck on Colaiacovo.

It came in the second period of the Blues’ 4-1 loss to the Stars on Saturday. At the time, the Stars were ahead 1-0. Here’s the hit

Ott was not penalized for the hit. After the Blues took exception to the hit, and a team-wide scrum ensued, Ott was sent to the box for roughing.

Blues coach Andy Murray wouldn’t comment on the hit after the game, saying he hadn’t seen it live. But on Monday, Murray voiced his opinion.

“I don’t think it was an OK hit . . . I think it was low,” Murray said. “Steve Ott is a hard-working player who has really, really improved as a player . . . he’s made himself into a player. I don’t think he needs some of that other stuff.”

By “other stuff,” Murray was also referring to Ott’s knee-on-knee collision with B.J. Crombeen in the third period of Saturday’s game, when the Stars were ahead 4-1 with 1:20 left in the game. Crombeen took exception right away and chased after Ott. Take a look . . .

Murray said Monday that he thought Ott’s knee-on-knee hit was worse than the hipcheck.

“Crombeen’s situation was more dangerous,” Murray said. “At that point, the game is a 4-1 game . . . (Ott) is an ex-teammate (of Crombeen’s) . . . what are you thinking?”

Ott received a 2-minute penalty for kneeing and a 5-minute fighting major, but Crombeen got a 2-minute instigator, 5-minute fighting major and a game misconduct. Under NHL rules, Crombeen could have been suspended for a game because he received an instigator in the final five minutes of the game, and Murray could have been fined $10,000.

But Crombeen has not been suspended and Murray’s fine, according to him, has been rescinded.

“There’s no way Crombeen went out there to start a fight,” Murray said.

Today, Ott will meet with the Campbell and learn if he’ll face further discipline.

Asked Monday if he had his eye on Ott, Campbell replied: “We have our eye on him to the point that we have a hearing (Tuesday) with him because our eye has been on Steve Ott. He is a repeat offender and he has been involved in discipline. It is not something we have to deal with right away so we will talk about it. Where I’m going to with it, I don’t know yet.”

On Monday, Campbell fined Scuderi for a questionable hip check on Chimera. Scuderi doesn’t have a reputation for being a dirty player, but take a look at the hit . . .

Scuderi was not penalized on the play, but Campbell fined him an undisclosed amount.

If Scuderi was fined, you can bet that Ott will be fined and possibly face a suspension.

NO PENALTY called on either incident! Pitiful. the officials should be fined too.

it’s about respect and so many players lack respect for their opponents. low hip checks are as dangerous as anything else that’s illegal. They acheive the same defensive play by a straight up check.. no need to go low.

I think Ott needs to be suspended for half a season and the ice officials should be called in to question about their judgments that game. It was the worst officiating i’ve ever seen.

His suspension is well deserved for executing Crawford’s signature cheap, dirty brand of hockey.

Ott is dirty player on both the hip check and the knee on knee he purposely tried to injure our players, I hope someone has the guts to spear him bad enough to send him home for the season.
