Scottrade joins best-workplaces list
We’re used to seeing two St. Louis brokerage firms on Fortune magazine’s list of 100 best companies to work for. Edward Jones and A.G. Edwards both made last year’s list, but of course Edwards has since been bought by Wachovia. So, Fortune found another St. Louis broker with worker-friendly policies: Scottrade joins this year’s list at No. 58. The magazine says it had 34,962 applicants for 170 new jobs last year, and had voluntary turnover of just 9 percent.
Edward Jones moved up to fourth place in this year’s survey, from 29th last year. Here’s why Fortune says it’s so great:
Some 70% of employees in the St. Louis home office got a 6.5% raise last year as the brokerage firm opened 1,000 new offices in the U.S.

David Nicklaus has covered St. Louis business for more than 25 years. His column appears three days a week on the Post-Dispatch business page.
Whatever they do for their employees, Scottrade does a lot more for investors (or at least provides the same essential services at much lower cost).
