You’re now leaving the book state. Welcome to mayo land.
The Census Bureau, to promote the economic census it’s conducting right now, has come out with a list of fun industry facts about each of the 50 states. It turns out that everyone is No. 1 in something, even if it’s something as obscure as “fruit and vegetable canning, pickling, and drying.” Iowa, if you must know, leads the nation in per-capita sales of this industry.
Missouri’s list of top-ranked industries is heavy on both the literate (book printing, stationery product manufacturing) and the mobile (specialized freight trucking, used household and office goods moving)
In Illinois, food is big. The Land of Lincoln leads in per-capita sales of “mayonnaise, dressing, and other prepared sauce manufacturing” and non-chocolate confectionery manufacturing. That means companies like Kraft sell a lot of stuff to people in other states, not that Illinoisans necessarily have a sweet tooth or a yearning for fatty sauces.
