New twist on beer talks: Report links SABMiller and Modelo

St. Louis Post-Dispatch

Everyone seems to believe that Mexico’s Grupo Modelo will play a pivotal role in the outcome of InBev’s attempt to buy Anheuser-Busch. As such, speculation ran rampant when Modelo’s CEO left the A-B board last week. Was he having trouble negotiating a deal with A-B? Was he already talking to InBev on his own? Now Reuters raises a third possibility: Its sources say that Modelo has met with SABMiller to explore the possibility of a merger.

One thing’s for sure: With all three of the world’s largest brewers eyeing Modelo, anyone who succeeds in buying 100 percent control is going to pay a high price.

Where are all the posters who said SABMiller is not afraid of being gobbled up? If they were not worried they would not be trying to increase their size so Inbev doesn’t grab them if the AB deal falls through. Nice call guys…
