Job losses accelerated in August
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
The latest Bureau of Labor Statistics numbers show metro St. Louis losing 11,100 jobs between August 2007 and August 2008. That’s a drop of 0.8 percent, and it’s significantly higher than July’s year-over-year loss of 5,500 jobs. St. Louis has now seen six straight months of falling employment, and August’s year-over-year drop is the biggest since July 2002.
Here are some sector-by-sector highlights (each gain or loss is since August 2007):
- Natural resources, mining and construction: -2,000
- Manufacturing: -4,300
- Professional and business services: -3,600
- Leisure and hospitality: -2,300
- Health care and social assistance: +2,300

How can anyone say we are not in a recession just doesn’t get it. The only sector of the job market that has been hiring for the last 2 years is in the health care industry. And that will continue since the average age keeps going up.Every other sector of the job market is down and will continue for quite some time.
