NY Times calls for antitrust investigation of Monsanto
The New York Times, in an editorial this morning, is calling for the Justice Department to investigate alleged anticompetitive practices by Monsanto. The Times editorialists note the importance of technology in modern agriculture and then add:
Following a decade of unchecked consolidation, it is time for the Justice Department to take a hard look at potentially anticompetitive behavior. A good place to start is with Monsanto, which is trying to block DuPont from adding its own genetic traits to Monsanto’s Roundup Ready technology to produce soybeans that would be resistant to multiple pesticides.
Monsanto denies the allegations, but the Times says they should be “fully investigated.” Earlier this month, Monsanto disclosed that the Justice Department had sought information about its dominance of the seed market.

The more I read about Monsanto the sicker I get.
I pray for their employees children, they have to live in this world too.
Unlabeled GMO Food causes allergies, just like normal food. The only difference is your doctor cant help you.
They added a gene from Bacillus Thuringiensis into corn, soy, cotton-seed and canola. These genetically modified foods make the Bt-toxin that can cause high blood pressure, diabetes and loss of memory. By avoiding their genetically modified foods, I no longer take medication for diabetes and I no longer take a large dose of atenolol for high blood pressure. The problem these days is finding foods made without these genetically modified foods.
You tree hugging environmentalist are a bunch of idiots. You think that any plant that is genetically altered is bad. Are you aware that all Wheat is “genetically altered”? It is a mix of 4 different grasses.
Starlink gene was a trumped up charge that cost the consumers of the world billions of dollars. NOT ONE PERSON was ever sickened by starlink.
Yet you are willing to believe in the untested and untrue science of GLOBAL WARMING. To remind you all, the United States and the world has been cooling since 1998. The average mean temperature of the world has actually dropped 1 1/2 degrees in the last 10 years. In 1999 scientists predicted that the oceans would rise enough by 2010 to flood all the way to ohio…I dont think that has happened.
AL GORE HAS USED GLOBAL WARMING TO PUSH THE GLOBAL GOVERNANCE ADGENDA.
go hug a tree. Before they are all gone.
To Danj,
You need to get your facts correct…please visit http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/ for the correct summary of global temperatures. I also find it interesting that no one is commenting on this actual story concerning NY Times recommendation on Monsanto anti-trust…seems like people can only push their personal agendas in regard to GMO and Global Warming.
Not being a biologist myself, I have to rely on Federal regulation (I think mainly by the FDA but also by EPA) to determine that genetically altered foods are “safe.” Note that lots of foods that are “safe” in moderation have fats and sugars that cause all sorts of health problems when consumed excessively. So, I’m not going avoid eating genetically altered foods because they might statistically reduce my life expectancy by a day or two.
One thing that I do know is that the “no till” agriculture that is possible with the use of general purpose vegetation killers such as Roundup, together with resistant varieties of crops, substantially reduces the amount of energy used in cultivating fields, and also substantially reduces the erosion of soil from them and the pollution that it causes. Rational people need to consider the benefits of changes in agricultural technology together with the potential risks, and not blindly assume that anything that profits a “giant corporation” is necessarily bad.
Can anyone clue me in on the definition of “anticompetitive behavior” Isn’t beating the competition something that all companies are engaged in? Could it be that the east-coast based Dupont is a little upset that they can’t match Monsanto’s results. Hey if we can’t beat the east coast in baseball this year, how about bio-science? I’ll take it! Go Monsanto!
Nope..no investigation of Monsanto. Can’t do that. Remember…since about
2003..life sciences, plant sciences nd biotech are suppose to ‘bring back’ St. Louis and bring back Missouri. The politicans were taught to say
‘bio-tech’, and to ’shill’ bio-tech whether they understood what it
meant or not. Costly ‘incubators’ on every corner, high-priced talent
brought in (some left). Private and public money by the tens of millions,
no source-untapped, including STIMULUS. And before that the poor
MOHELA account. They drained the student loan account to build labs.
Every Saturday morning on KMOX we hear the latest bio-tech ’sermon’
from the head of the RCGA. St. Louis Commerce Magazine is the
Bio-Tech/Science Journal.
What if they have been wrong? What if it’s not the ‘way back’. Then there will be nothing to investigate.
