Eagle takes wing in new A-B InBev logo
St. Louis Post-Dispatch
When it announced its plan to buy Anheuser-Busch, InBev pledged to keep the Clydesdales and other important A-B symbols. Today’s news release on the completion of the merger makes clear that the Anheuser-Busch eagle is here to stay, too. In fact, it’s been incorporated into the new parent-company insignia. As logos go, the new one is not bad, but this eagle appears to be flying away, which makes one wonder where it’s going. I have a feeling St. Louisans will remain nostalgic for the old A-and-Eagle, with its fiercer-looking bird.

David Nicklaus has covered St. Louis business for more than 25 years. His column appears three days a week on the Post-Dispatch business page.
ugly
Looks like a cartoon, similar to InBev’s previous logo.
I don’t Like it.
I hate it. It’s sad to see the old logo go.
you can tell the world class marketing dept at AB did not design this logo… The Belguims must have done it. It looks shoddy and cheap. What an embarrassment to history of AB and the creative Marketing dept of AB~!
As a graphic designer, I don’t think much of the logo. In particular, the A linking to the B tries hard to be clever, but it’s really trite. It’s also unbalanced, with the eagle flying out of the frame. Doesn’t do much for me, and it’s a sad end to a glorious era.
Obviously this is simply the first round of designs. Surely this is not final. As a graphic designer, I would like to offer my services to design a new logo the newly merged brewery.
Time for new logo and new ideas.
The Bud Lite “drinkability” campaign must go! The beverage with the most drinkability is water! While BL has a very mild taste, I don’t think AB should be comparing it with water! (It’s a beer for people who really don’t care for the taste of beer but can’t admit it.)
awful…i hate it
I think the logo change is appropriate. The old AB logo has a definate American look to it. Since ABInBev is a foreign company I think it makes sense to drop any patriotic themes.
Looks like clip art - way to go InBev.
This logo strips AB of all it’s “regal” precense. The “King of Beers” is now just another sanitized corporate conglomerate. Sad, sad, sad.
No thought was put into this design. A more fierce eagle should go the other way maybe from behind the logo, its wings spread across ab and InBev joining the two together.
instead of an eagle, perhaps a vulture would be more appropriate…
I find it too cheap, just like Inbev to start out on the wrong foot. Makes me want to start drinking Stag what next. JUst use the old logo
I wonder what will become of the AB sign on Hwy 40 that used to be in Sportsman’s Park.
My cockatiel looks meaner in the morning than this little canary
My first thought when I saw this on the announcement of the deal closing was the same as yours - where is the eagle going? Are they trying to tell us something? Why would InBev do that when they know how sensitive (understandably) St. Louisans are to the take over?
Doesn’t really look like an eagle with those colors.
Looks like a wimp compared to the old AB fierce looking eagle.
Is that an albatross?
this could be the ugliest logo i have ever seen, of anything.. that in bev needs to be much smaller or just take it off..overall though this is a ugly ugly let me say that again ugly logo
There go our jobs. Fly away, jobs! Fly away!
I could have done the same thing with free clip art on the internet. What’s next, changing the Clydesdales to pink My Little Pony’s? Awesome.
I hope they didn’t spend long on that thing, looks like something my 5th grader would have designed in his art class. You can tell they didn’t let the AB marketing dept. design it. It s^^ks!!!
In what way is this keeping the AB Eagle. This looks like a completely different Eagle. I can definietly see the South American style in the design. I woudl have gone with ABIB as teh company log with the Eagle in teh A just like it has always been. This is an Emasculating symbol that you would not expect to be associated with NASCAR, MLB, and the NFL.
who can take this logo seriously?! it looks so cheap with no credibility behind it whatsoever!
Look upon this logo as a symbol of freedom to buy gallons non-AB beer without an ounce of guilt.
Too cartoonish! Gross. I miss the real AB.
ugly
How sad and appropriate that the eagle is flying away…
That logo is absolutely pathetic. They talk about AB’s iconic brands of beer. The old logo was also iconic, absolutely one of the most historical and identifiable product logos ever. And what is one of the first moves of the “brilliant” Carlos Britos…let’s scrap the classic AB logo and go with this piece of Schlitz.
NO NO NO! TERRIBLE!
I know that this is a European company now, and I am glad they are keeping the eagle, but this is a bad logo design. Where is the eagle going??? Why didn’t InBev get the AB marketing group on this assignment? They would have made it look amazing.
Who approved this logo? That is what I want to know. Who saw this and said “Yep, that’s the one” and why do they still have a job?
It looks like an Airline Logo. Not a traditional Brewer’s logo. Its lame at best.
The reason the eagle looks so wimpy is because its the So American eagle.
The new logo is downright awful. This whole situation makes me want to cry. I lived in St Louis my entire life until i joined the military 3 years ago. I’m afraid that when I go back home to visit, everything I remember and love about St Louis will be destroyed.
This must be a joke. A beautiful classic logo turned to junk. Who designed this, someone at Kinko’s?
That ain’t no stink’n eagle!
The old logo had history, tradition, and was widely recognized. This new one is weak and doesn’t convey anthing to do with Budweiser. Add me to the list of those that hate it.
hey haters, i made this in mrs. barcia’s fifh grade junior ahcievment class. eveyone liked it, including mr. roberts. so i used it to gets a job at kinkos. when i grow up i want to work at teh world class marketing department please.
can you please keep me off the list of people who do not like this logo.
The new symbol looks terrible. It looks like a dove rather than an Eagle.
The cost cutting has begun, AB’s marketing obviously was not involved with this blunder. This is terrible, looks like they used a cheap clip-art dove and put zero effort into this logo. I guess they must have had a contest at a local grade school and this is winner….what a POS!!! What next, will the Budweiser bowtie be changed to a real polka dot bowtie.
unbalanced!!! but nice idea - international - all encompassing - sunrise and sunset - brown and red - eagle that looks a bit like a seabird - would work better with a geometric diagonal background about an inch to an inch and a half wide from bottom left to top right to pull it together, or completely rearrange the bird’s positioning… don’t know… it needs help.
I think the logo is “way special”.
I grew up idolizing the older members of my family that worked for AB. I don’t think there isn’t a college student/recent graduate from St. Louis who didn’t find the prospect of working for AB at the very least attractive. Now the tradition is gone and InBev gives us this! The introduction of the new logo is down right shameful. I recently graduated college and moved back to St. Louis. Tradition played a big role in my up-bringing, instilled in me by the family members that took pride in working for such a great company. This new logo (if you can call it that) is a disgrace to the hard working St. Louisans that came before InBev. Hold on to what you have of the old AB. T-Shirts, Blankets, Beer Bottles, and Cans! Take pictures of the old sign on 40. Remember what St. Louisans built, but meet the new boss as same as the old.
A gradient on an eagle… The majesty of lazy graphic design.
Looks like the eagle is flying away from Anheuser-Busch and going to INBEV . Pretty appropriate I think . I hope it doesn’t die on the way to Brussels.
The cost cutting has begun. It looks like someone in customer service went through clip-art and came up with that while they were handling a customer complaint on the phone….
This is only the beginning. First the corporate logo, then the labels, then the recipes will all change. Burrito is clueless and will run this company into the ground.
Wow! If that logo was chosen, how bad were the others?
Honestly, I don’t understand the extreme reaction to this logo. No, it’s not the old AB logo, but it’s not the old AB, either. While a few responders have a point about the fact that the eagle lacks eagle-like characteristics, I think it looks cool, forward, modern, and definitely not cheap. I was concerned that they wouldn’t keep the eagle, or the AB name, at all; I think we got off easy.
Why pay $52 billion for the name “Anheuser-Busch” only to abbreviate it to AB InBev. The eagle is really ugly.
It’s like I said on twitter: The old design is conservative. But it was bold and assertive, it made you feel string when you looked at it.
This is kind of smarmy. Plus the Eagle is Flying AWAY! Maybe they should try one with it landing ON…
If it were me designing this, I would not change it this dramatically.
This looks retarded.
well at least the major shareholders didn’t make the new logo, all it would be is dollar signs. what a mistake.
That is horrible. It looks like something that should be on an 80’s vintage tee.
late breaking news (clarification) from Dave Peacock… A-B InBev North America will retain the iconic A & Eagle logo.
whether this is an instant reversal or a just a snafu - I give the home team props for realizing the gliding golden pigeon was a disaster.
Embarassing. Flat out embarassing. Looks like something a sixth grader slapped together on a computer in about 5 minutes.
Consider this a small sign of the disaster to come. Stock up on your Bud now before the Brazilians run the company and its iconic brands into the ground.
Keep traditional A-B logo with less prominent In-Bev lettering. In-Bev is taking the first step towards the ultimate destruction of a very popular product brand. Consumers in the US and worldwide recognize and identify this brand and the product performance associated with this brand.
Here we are in the middle of a worldwide financial crisis. Each of David’s blog entries affecting that attract 2 or 3 comments. But the change in the A-B logo attracts 56 comments to this point. While reinforcing Tip O’Neill’s observation that “All politics is local,” it also illustrates that much of “politics” is based on “personal economic interests.”
It also recalls the fallacy stated many years ago under a Republican administration that “What is good for General Motors is good for America.” For decades, that was used by Democrats as a criticism of the economic idea espoused mostly by Republicans that prosperity “trickles down.” So, which party is primarily supporting GM now? The non-partisan truth is that some things that are good for GM (and its cohort, the United Auto Workers Union) are good for America, and some are not.
People who aren’t sufficiently intelligent and intellectually honest to recognize the complexity of this issue do not contribute much to resolving it in a way that achieves what I consider to be in the best national interest: having an economic policy that provides the maximum economic benefit to Americans as a whole, while taxing the majority who benefit from it to compensate the minority who lose from it.
In the case of the A-B buyout, the “winners” are the shareholders in A-B and — probably — consumers of beer worldwide. The prospective “losers” are A-B employees and — to a lesser extent — the various businesses in St. Louis where they spend their money. But the “big picture” is that, while the contribution of St. Louis to the world’s consumption of beer may decline, it’s contribution in other areas may expand. Chief among these is healthcare, with the Washington University/Barnes-Jewish consortium (and also St. Louis University and St. John’s Mercy) being foremost.
Would anybody like to argue that being “first” in the production of beer is a more important societal goal than being pre-eminent in the provision of healthcare? Perhaps some of you folks who are so “brilliant” at selling beer should consider re-training for a career in healthcare that will be of a lot more benefit to society. And I say this as somebody who enjoys drinking high quality beer (better than most that A-B produces) but recognizes that it is not life’s ultimate gratification.
this new symbol,of the combine merger of the two brewers, doesn’t leave very much meaning, for the SPIRIT OF ST. LOUIS, looks like its flying away, from the greatest, beer city in the country.
This logo is HILARIOUS! It looks like the eagle is in a hurry to get away from this merger!
This is the best they could do?
The old logo was tired and worn. I welcome the new streamlined look. And, outside of Missouri, I bet most people have no idea what the old logo looked like anyway.
The cartoon eagle is, indeed, flying away. Indicative of the “quality” to come?
This logo shows ZERO imagination, and is embarrassing.
Are we going to have a big, lighted version of this on the highway outside of Busch?
Remember it’s the corporate logo, not a brand logo. Lucky to have ‘A-B’ and an eagle on it. It’s modern looking. August III’s old school thinking is what lost the company. Years of pumping money in Budwieser’s brand name in the U.S. to gain a one or two percent market gain rather than buying In-Bev never made much sense to me. I’m no longer working for A-B. I wish I was on the recent list of the big-dogs with a 100 million dollar severence package.
One more thing… say ‘Good-Bye’ to the born on date…
Looks like a utility company logo.
It’s a marketing debacle! Everyone associates the original logo to AB products. Also, does InBev realize how much it is going to cost to change the logo? It’s on everything! Next thing they will do is start changing recipes. This is the beginning of the end…very sad!
I teach graphic design, and if one of my students turned this logo in for an assignment, I would send them back to the concept stage. There is nothing “European” about this solution; instead it looks like a ten-minute crank out with bad, incommunicative clipart. I’m very disappointed.
That is the worst alteration of an iconic local logo since Cardinals’ General Manager Frank Lane removed the “birds on bat” design for the 1956 season. It was restored the following year.
I’m not sure who they’re trying to appeal to with a robotic, yellow, red, and orange eagle. Apparently eagles must look a lot different in Europe. Talk about a total bastardization of a great thing. So much for keeping A-B’s history intact!
This is the most pathetic attempt at a logo ive ever seen. Leave it up to some European no talent ass clowns to cahnge everything that was good about Anheuser Busch.
Aweful. Looks like something from a kid’s computer. Everything sacred to America is going down in flames. Where the heck is that bird going anyway?
This logo is similar to Anheuser-Busch Employee’s Credit Union’s Eagle. I will miss the old logo.
I’d like to see how they’re going to incorporate this into the classic Budweiser medallion logo. This ought to be interesting (and yes, it’s fugly).
I call it the GTFO Eagle… ’cause that eagle is GETTIN’ THE F*CK OUT. HA!
This is just a taste of the quality of marketing, product and management we are about to see come out of the Inbev deal…..The Brazilian influence will cause every aspect of this organization to look at cost and cost only as the determining factor. Taste level and appearance will suffer both internally and to the public.
I’m sort of shocked that they removed all of the corporate branding. Obviously, they want to reflect the change in ownership, but to wipe the entire AB image altogether (save the lone eagle on that page) is a bit harsh.
For example, when Live Nation bought House of Blues (here in Chicago and Nationwide), they kept everything the same and just operated from a behind-the-scenes point. Many people STILL don’t know about the corporate change, they just know the HOB is still serving up cornbread, Jake & Elwood tschochkies and live music.
If InBev changes the beer labels, I guarantee you people will stop buying/drinking.
Hideous. Someone should lose their job over it.
Extreme Ugly! I am no longer purchase A&B products. Former Bud drinker
I hate the new logo! No longer purchase A&B Poducts. I am searching for a tastey local microbrewed beer. Corporate Greed in action.
